When I go into customer directory and try to opt-in customers for email marketing, the checkbox is greyed out, and my cursor turns into a red prohibited sign. I'll attach an image, sorry for the low quality but it should hopefully get the point across. What am I missing?

I'm not an attorney, nor do I play one on tv, but I think that would could as consent...? If you don't you probably would want to add some disclosure text. Not positive though.
You can subscribe when importing. You would have to assemble the info into the CSV file and upload that instead of manually entering. You have to create an additional column for the subscribe status. You can reference here: https://squareup.com/help/au/en/article/5346-get-started-with-square-marketing
See below:
Hope that helps!

Hello @keen !
If I remember correctly, various laws were passed here in the US that requires consent from the customer to be put on a email or text list. This is why we can't just add people ourselves.
Your customers will have to opt in via emailed or texted receipts or sign themselves up via a webform or at the point of sale.

Thanks, they have opted in at events but on sign in sheets, not through square. I'm not adding random folks 🙂

@keen Gotcha. Problem is Square doesn't know about the paper signup sheets and may think you're just spamming random email addresses.
What you could do is send an email from a business email account to those people asking them to sign up on your website or a square hosted page. There are links you can copy on the dashboard. That way they authorize marketing messages in a way Square can track.

@keen @ryanwanner If you import customers, you can enroll them in marketing. However, as Ryan mentioned, you need explicit opt in from customers to comply with regulations.

I do have opt in, but on paper forms they fill out at events. It looks like square only accepts them if they opt in through square.

Hi @keen 👋 Thanks for sharing your question with the Square Community! My name is Violet and I'm one of the Moderators here.
In addition to what @ryanwanner and @WoodCandleCo have already said, there is some great information in this thread from @Breffni regarding your reachable audience for Square Marketing Email Campaigns.
I hope this helps but let us know if you have any further questions! 😊
