Invoices and receipts don't show "Tax" if there is no tax applied to the sale.

Hi @absoluteent,

Thanks for getting in touch!

My name is Sheamus and I work out of Square's Melbourne office in Australia and can help out with this one.

"Tax Invoice" will only appear on your receipts if you've signed up to Square with an ABN (which is also required to display on an official tax invoice).

It looks like you've signed up for a Square account as a sole trader without entering an ABN into the applicable field when you first registered. Signing up as a sole trader without entering an ABN is only intended for hobby businesses that are not required to display ABNs or charge GST.

What this means is that:

1) As a hobby business with no ABN you are not registered for GST and as such you shouldn’t be displaying "Tax Invoice" on your receipts.

2) If you do have an ABN and are registered for GST, this is something that will need to be corrected on your Square account.

Based on what you've said it sounds like you're registered for GST and should also have an ABN attached to the account. To rectify this please send me a private message or get in touch with support on 1800 760 137 and we'll go from there.

Cheers 👍

Sorry, I could be wrong but I feel there is a flaw in your answer and the free invoice templates provided by square. According to the attached link from the Australian government ATO website, you cannot write 'Tax Invoice' on an invoice if you are not registered for GST.

Just because someone has an ABN does not automatically mean that they will be registered for GST. The last time I checked it was only required if you gross annual earnings of $75k or more.

So for square customers who have their ABN linked to their square account, but do not have any 'Tax' enabled, there needs to be an option for either 'Tax Invoice' or simply 'Invoice'.

I can see in this thread you have replied and said that is it not 'required' to say tax invoice, whereas the attached link clearly states it 'SHOULD NOT' say tax invoice if not registered for such.

Hey @daddy54,

Thanks for getting in touch!

I took a further look into this and it appears the presence of the words "Tax Invoice" or "Invoice" on an Australian receipt is determined by whether or not you've signed up to Square with an ABN or not.

Obviously there are some ABNs that are not registered for GST - my understanding is that while you're not required to have the words "Tax Invoice" display on your receipts in this scenario, your receipt is still compliant as long as you're not listing a GST component on the receipt.

I've passed this up the chain though to verify though - I'll let you know what I hear!

Can the word "Tax" be removed as the headline when emailed to customers? We are not registered for GST. Is this a option? To remove the word Tax

I have the same issue. I supplied Square with my ABN but I am not required to be registered for GST.

Emails & receipts to my clients appear with TAX INVOICE.

Hey @kylegp,

Thanks for reaching out.

Per some of my other responses here, if you don't have GST turned on for your Square account, no GST amounts will be shown on your receipt or charged to the customer - so even if the receipt says "Tax Invoice", if there is no GST (or other tax amount) amount highlighted on the receipt, then the receipt is compliant. Hope this helps!

Hi Seamus,

I do understand that but calling an invoice that does not include tax a "Tax Invoice", for a business that is not registered for tax, is not correct.

@kylegp My understanding is that if you're not registered for the GST, the lack of a GST component is the most relevant thing here to indicate that the receipt hasn't included a tax component (rather than the wording of "Invoice" vs "Tax Invoice")

With that said - I'm not a qualified financial adviser so I can only really relay the info I've been given based on past instances of this coming up. Are you seeing any specific issues appearing as a result of the wording?

If you'd like to follow this up further I do suggest getting in touch with our Australian support team - you can call support on 1800 760 137 (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm Melbourne time), or contact us via online chat or email:

1. Sign in to your Square account

2. Head to our contact page https://squareup.com/help/au/en/contact

3. Go to "Other" then "I don't see my issue"

4. Click "Message us" or "Email us"

Hey mate, I know its been a while since you posted so you've no doubt found another solution by now but if anyone else is reading I just used 'xero' for invoices, you don't need to sign up, you can just have an email sent to you with both a tax invoice or a standard invoice which you can then save, and the whole pdf is editable, which is a lot easier than this one, for example I just make notes at the bottom saying direct deposit available to the following bank account, etc. and it also calculates your line items total when you put in a price and qty.

Thanks for that. I don't actually use Square for my invoicing, I use Invoice Ninja which allows me to fully customise everything.

However, TAX INVOICE still shows on printed receipts from the Square terminal but there is seemingly no way to turn this off.

I am now registered for GST so this is irrelevant to me now but still something that Square should look into.
