iPad help - which apps need Cellular Data for Square Register to work?
tl:dr; Which apps under the iPad Settings|Cellular Data|Use Cellular Data For list must be active to use Square Register. The app is not listed as an option to "enable" cell data.
details:
I am setting up a remote terminal for an organzation which does field work literally *in a field*. We take fees and donations and would like to use a low-data/low cost SIM in an iPad to accept the payments. We can get a SIM for free which allows 1MB/month (which is more than enough for the 20-30 transactions we would accept). BUT - if the iPad is allowed to use any other data services, like Find My iPhone or the iTunes Store, it will chew up all the data in a matter of seconds (even SquareUp's home page takes over 2MB of data to load).
I've looked in the Cell Data switches and SquareUp isn't one of the options for apps that can use Cell data, so I'm guessing(?) that it's using Safari or ??? as a conduit for sending the payment data and Register UI updates. We tried to get it running for about 2 hours this past weekend and ended up giving up. (we had told people in advance to be prepared with cash/check, so it was all good, but we have a lot of college students who usually have nothing but CCs and mobile/NFC payment options). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello @TEI, this is an interesting question.
So I have an iPhone 8 and the Point of Sale app was on the list of apps I could enable for cellular data. That's weird that it's not showing up on your iPad. I tried testing it on the iPads we have in the office, but we only have Wi-Fi enabled ones. I'm going to try and swing by the Best Buy near my home tonight to see if I can test it out on one of their display iPads.
Hang in there! 🙂
