Is there a way to force swipe to read the card when the EMV reader won't read the chip?

I have the EMV chip reader and the small square stripe reader (used when I have one of those remaining clients that don't have chip cards). What can I do when the cardholder's chip can't be read by the machine? I know it isn't my equipment and we know the problem is their card. I go through an endless cycle of continuously cancelling the transaction and reentering the card in the EMV reader and trying to process again and again. I try to use the swipe to read the magnetic stripe on their card, but it refuses because it is a chip card. Yes, duh!! Is there a way to force it to read the card with the swipe? Thank you.

After 3 attempts to read the chip, reinserting it multiple times without canceling (on the same transaction) it will allow you to then swipe the card.
