I'd like to be able to track sales by vendor for a consignment shop. Has anyone used Square to do this? Maybe create a category which is a specific vendor?
Any suggestions on how anyone has done it will be a big help.

I own a Consignment Shop and do not use anything but Square POS. I found a way to not only separate each vendor in the system but I am also able to barcode each one of their items so that at the end of the month the report shows great detail for their sales. Having a barcode scanner will make your checkout process simpler but its not required for this method. Here's how I did it.
Let's use "Rosie's Rocks" as an example company.
- Create an Item
The name of my item is Rosie's Rocks
Add all of the appropriate info for the options ( which are actually your individual items for this vendor)
Don't forget to add the category. EX: Home Goods, Clothing, Food etc. This will help you during the reporting process to see what categories are selling best in your shop.
- Add an "Option Set"
Blue Rock
Green Rock
Black Rock
Yellow Rock
- Add your prices for each option
Blue Rock $5.00
Green Rock $5.00
Black Rock $5.00
Yellow Rock $5.00
You'll notice that after each option that you created, a SKU has been auto generated. You can change this if you would like. - Check out
If you have a scanner and have already created your labels all you need to do is scan the item and the POS will do the rest. If you don't have a scanner and have not created labels no problem, you can still use this process. Open up your POS and tap the item "Rosie's Rocks". When you tap on it you will be looking at all of the "Options" within that item (which are actually all of the items for that vendor.) Simply tap the item and you're good to go. I highly recommend adding all of your "items" (Vendors) to your favorites screen on your POS. If you aren't scanning your barcodes, this will save your life and your time. - Running your Report
Home> Reports> item sales
Add your dates that you wish the information to be generated for. For instance Nov 1,2023-Nov 30, 2023
In the upper right hand corner click on "Export" and choose "Detail CSV"
When your spreadsheet generates, you can filter out all of the information you don't need, alphabetize it by Vendor (item) and you will have a detailed account for every item that has come across your register.
I realize I may have oversimplified this because I use it everyday so please let me know if I can clarify anything further for you!

Using Square for consignment sales is definitely possible, though it requires some creative setup. Here are a few approaches you could consider:
Categories for vendors: As you suggested, creating a category for each vendor is one way to track sales. You can then run reports filtered by category to see each vendor's sales.
Custom fields: Square allows you to add custom fields to items. You could create a "Vendor" custom field and fill it with the appropriate vendor name for each item.
SKU system: Develop a SKU system that incorporates vendor information. For example, the first few characters could represent the vendor.
Item variations: If you have a limited number of vendors, you could set up item variations with the vendor names.
Third-party integrations: There are some third-party apps that integrate with Square and offer more robust consignment tracking features.
Each method has pros and cons depending on your specific needs and the number of vendors you work with. The categories or custom fields approaches are probably the most straightforward for most consignment shops.

I just wanted to revisit this thread and update.
ConsignCloud has a full integration with Square as of this posting. Their customer support is great and I can't recommend them enough.
