Why can't we use pictures for the menu on square for restaurants, but we can on regular square?

It seems counter intuitive that we can't use pictures on the square for restaurant app, but we can on regular square... It seems regular square is better for restaurants than, square for restaurants app ... Does anyone have any feedback?

Hey @dportillo88.  Well, I guess if the ability to use item pictures on our POS grids is the most important feature for a POS to have, then you would be correct.  But, in this case, Square for Restaurants grids are much more flexible than regular POS, so often I’ve found that if I want to use pictures (which I don’t because they are distracting) I need to adjust them anyway.  So adding them manually works for me much better than automatically importing them from my item catalog.

Since you asked for feedback, here it is.  I find the Square Restaurants POS to be one of the best that Square (or anyone) offers.  It has new functionality that has made my life much, much easier.  Since I consider pictures and photos to be unimportant at all on a POS (which customers never see), the fact that Restaurants POS doesn’t use item pictures is completely and unimportant to me.  If I or my employees need pictures to do their jobs, I can always add them.  I just have to do it manually, which is fine with me.

This is the beauty of all of the different Square POS offerings.  If you like a certain one and want to use it, then use it.  If you don’t like one —- especially if your most important feature of pictures is missing — then don’t use it and submit a feature request on the Ideate Board to ask them to at least start with the photos in our item catalogs.

I don’t understand why the condescending “I don’t think” it’s important attitude. I never mentioned it was the most important thing I was looking for in a POS either. I’m not sure how you helped at all with your opinion but ok…weird flex man, but ok.

Hey there @dportillo88

I am sorry that Chip's message came across that. I am confident that he meant no offense and was merely trying to help as he always does. Every app at Square will have its Pros and Cons and most of the time it was designed around the feedback of our Sellers. That being said we are always aware that there is room for improvement in everything we do, and that is why (as Chip mentioned) we have our Ideate Boards.

We’d love it if you'd submit this request on our Ideate page for Square for Restaurants. Our team monitors these boards, and we triage them to measure needs. You can search the boards to see if this has been requested before and add your use case if so!

I noticed the thread was changed to resolved.. Nothing has been resolved there has been no answer if we can add pictures or not, using square for restaurants...? Or how to contact someone that can have some answers. Online and phoen support are clueless and they can only read and quote square articles.

It was not marked as resolved, but I completely understand the confusion.  Someone (not me) marked my answer as best answer, which is a term I wish they would change to something like “helpful answer” or “possible solution” or something.  Anyway, though I was not the one to mark my own answer as “best” (which would be arrogant, eh?) I did unmark it to remove that confusion.

@dportillo88 There was no condescension intended.  I was responding to this in your original post:

It seems regular square is better for restaurants than, square for restaurants app ... Does anyone have any feedback?

My post was my feedback.  I was using “you” in the royal sense, making a statement for any reader who might feel that the different picture mechanism in the Restaurants POS was a deal breaker.  I was one of a team of sellers who spent countless hours beta testing the new Restaurants UI, and giving feedback to the engineers.  My efforts in that process weren’t nearly as much as other sellers, but I watched the conversations, the give and take, etc.  And, IMO, the final product is one of the best POS on the market for restaurants and other food and beverage establishments.  I simply did not agree with your assertion that “…regular square is better for restaurants than, square for restaurants app.”  It’s not even a contest, IMO.  In my defense, since your post was solely about pictures and since that statement was made in a post about pictures, I think my assumption that it was extremely important to you wasn’t wrong.  Having said that…

My apologies for coming across as condescending.  Honestly, re-reading my post now I can say that I probably should have said much less than I did, but I’ve never been known for using few words.  I can admit that someone who hasn’t read my thousands of posts here might have been offended by the “tone” of my post, whether I intended it to be read with that “tone” or not.

That misunderstanding, unfortunately, is one of the reasons I rarely reply to “what is your opinion/feedback” posts, because of the fact that responses can easily be misunderstood.  I apologize for any offense you might have taken.

Well there are paragraphs written in your response about pretty much nothing other than how you think its dumb to have pictures. There is zero usable information that contributes to an answer or a solution to the problem.... But we can move on to the actual question. Im not sure if these questions are supposed to be answered by employees from square or just people from all over using the app. that being said..

Is there any way to add pictures to the menu on square for restaurants app?

I have also been asking about an issue that seems to have been discussed for years but completely ignored.. The sound notification of incoming orders on the square KDS screen, its so silent and "Soft" is practically impossible to hear in a kitchen setting. Is there a way to make these notifications be heard ?

There is no resolution to the KDS sound issue at the moment.  I (and others) mentioned it when we did the beta testing for that, but so far I’ve not seen any fix for it.

This is the Square Seller Community, so most of the answers come from fellow sellers.  Occasionally Square moderators will jump in if there is an issue they need to raise with the engineers, or if the issue involves account-sensitive information that needs to be resolved in a more secure, private setting.  But usually your should expect replies to come from fellow sellers who use the same products and services that you are inquiring about.

And yes there is a way to add images to POS tiles. See screen shot. Just go to your online dashboard and edit the tile you want to add an image to. You can make the background of that tile either be an image or a color.

I hope all of that helps.  If you have other questions, I use Square Restaurants POS all the time now.  I no longer use Square KDS for various reasons, including the decision to make it Android only.  But that’s my issue, not Square’s.
