Control What is Displayed on Terminal

We operate a coworking facility and want to use the Terminal as a customer pay as you go option in our lounge. We offer paid food & bev that we want customers to pay for, on the honor system. We would not be there managing this / checking them out.

I just got the Terminal and was setting it up, but i'm not certain if it can support our use cases

1. It looks like this is intended for an employee to manage then turn over to customer for payment. There's the "More" icon on the screen that displays all transactions, orders, customers, etc. As we want this to be self serve, we'd like to just have a menu of select items on the screen that the customer can self-serve. Is this possible to strip away anything that would/should be internal facing to present a customer-only view?

2. We have lots of items in our library that would not need to be presented here (ie events). We'd like to select only certain items to be available on the Terminal. Is this possible?

Thank you all for your help, we are new to Square and are trying to learn how best to use this.

Hi @joshkaplan ! Thank you for posting in our Square Community!

To start with your first statement "It looks like this is intended for an employee to manage then turn over to customer for payment" ... you are correct. The Terminal is more for employees to use and then the customer is shown the screen when it is time to finish the transaction.

If you are wanting customers to be able to view a limited menu and check themselves out, Self Serve ordering through a QR code may be a good option for you. Customers would scan a QR code that has been generated and would be taken to an ordering site where they could complete their order.

Square also offers a Kiosk that is designed for self checkout.

These are both great options for self serve checkout. Please let me know if you have any questions and I hope this helps!

Thank you @Summer2024 , both would be good options. As we're a small operation, the $50/mo kiosk fee might be too much and not make the juice worth the squeeze.

For the QR code option, assuming we'd need a Square retail site or a custom site made with square product links and checkout to make this work?

@joshkaplan - you would not need a full wesbite to set it up. Your products would just need to be marked as available so they would show up on the QR code ordering site.

How to set up

  1. Log in to Square Online
  2. Go to Fulfillment > QR code ordering
  3. Select Set up QR codes for the desired location
  4. Choose the items to make available for ordering
  5. Add instructions for customers
  6. Create ordering stations
  7. Set ordering hours
  8. Select Get QR code
  9. Choose between an ordering card or QR code only
  10. Download the QR codes
  11. Print and place the QR codes

Take a look and I'll be here to answer any other questions 🙂

We unfortunately do not have Square Online since we're a local business and dont have an e-commerce component.

Looks like Square Online is needed for QR codes?

You would need a Square Online subscription to use QR self-serve ordering, yes.
