Quick Guide to Getting Started with Square

Getting set up to take payments with Square takes just a few minutes. In this quick start guide we’ll cover the basics.

5 steps to take a payment:

  1. 📲  Download Square Point of Sale app - First things first, download the Square Point of Sale app on your compatible iOS or Android device.
  2. ️  Create your Square account - Click “Sign Up” to create your Square account, either from the app or from our website.
  3. 💰  Link a bank account - To get your funds deposited automatically into your bank, link a transactional (checking or savings) bank account. Note that it takes up to 5 business days for the account link can be verified by your bank, which impacts how soon you’ll see your first deposit, so you’ll want to set this up right away.
  4. 📝  Update your business information - Make sure that your business information and receipts are correct so that your customers recognize the receipt they receive from you. This is a helpful best practice in reducing chargebacks.
  5. 💳  Take a test transaction and refund the test payment - Now it’s time to take us out for a spin. Type in $1.00 or another test amount, and go ahead and swipe a card. If you don’t have a reader yet, you can manually-enter the card info. One thing to note - don’t go too crazy with your test transaction; at this time test transactions can’t be deleted from your account and will stay in your reporting history. Once the payment goes through, tap into your Transactions and refund the payment.

That’s it! With these 5 steps, you’re good to go to take a payment.

I am running a mobile repair shop. Currently I am using RepairDesk Pay. My friend recommended me to shift to square. If anyone can tell me what to do? Any pros and cons of square so I can compare before shifting over here. Thanks in advance.

I'm opening a CBD shop. I continue to find very contrary information out there. Is Square going to support our business or are they going to let me get all setup just to shut me down? I'm being genuine and trying to find out. I just want to know if they allow it and if the other stories I hear of people getting shut down are because they aren't abiding by the guidelines.

Hi @Louie8503 - thanks for reaching out and bringing your concerns to us here via the Seller Community. Happy to have you!

Square supports businesses that use and sell CBD products, however we require that you be accepted into our CBD program specifically in order to do so. Many concerns shared sound like they are from Sellers who may have begun selling CBD before being approved.

Feel free to apply in the link above!

I have a botanical business that sells CBD products thru Square. Square will support businesses selling CBD products but it’s a different process to apply and get approval. Fee’s are higher then regular accounts and you need to allow at least 2-3 weeks for approval as it has to be vetted by the compliance Dept. Once you get approval for a CBD account it’s very important that you understand the Square TOS for selling and be very careful that you don’t sell prohibited items. Overall I would say that Square has been very supportive of my businesses over the years. I have a few different businesses and have been using square to process payments at all of them since Square got started years ago

My CBD distributer and business partner uses square as her processor and I was referred after having no luck getting a merchant account after building a store on Shopify. Do you sell online as well? After too much trouble switching from shopify and then to bigcommerce, I figured I would just build my store with SquareUp/Weebly and simplify things. From what I've read, they seam to be very hemp supportive! Did you have to do any extra documentation like signing your life away like they do on a couple of other platforms or, anything specific I might be missing before I get even more side-lined again? Thank you so much in advance for answering my questions. Us hemp entrepreneurs have to sometimes rely on each other to navigate these very gray areas! Thank you THANK YOU!

I don’t sell online but yes square is very supportive as long as you’re very careful to not sell prohibited items. They will allow you to sell online I just choose not to. The compliance team will very carefully look over your website and business social media pages to make sure you aren’t advertising prohibited items before approval. I would suggest that you very carefully look over the TOS for selling CBD via Square and be very sure you don’t violate them
