Permanently change the weight from lbs. to ounces on the backend

Is there a way to permanently change the weight to ounces on the backend?  Our items weight ounces, not pounds. Below is a photo of what I'm talking about.

Hey there, @rtfulk 👋

I pulled these steps to update the unit type for multiple items from the Support Article that @Candlestore shared :

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Items & services (or Items & menus or Items & inventory) > Items.
  2. Tick multiple items from the list > Edit items.
  3. Navigate to the Sold by column and select a unit type.
  4. Click Update variations.

By default, each new item you create will have the unit type “per item”. When you set your unit type, you can choose from a list of preset units, such as pounds, ounces, and feet. You can also choose to add your own custom unit, in whole number or decimal quantities. When you add, update, or delete an item unit type, the change will reflect in your point of sale app, Square Dashboard, and Square Online website.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions 🙂

@rtfulk ;

When Creating the Item you can create a Custom sell by units.  But my one Item I sell by LBS, I can not change because I sell it by different Stock by Units and get this Warning:

Measurement units can’t be changed when there are multiple stock-by units.

I am not sure if you can change this for the Main Item and Create a Custom unit of Ounces for example.

I just did this for a newly created item and was able to create a Unit of measure of oz, and had to also put in a Precision of Measure..... Decimal places for the item.

Here is an article for more information, : 6678-item-unit-type-and-decimal-quantities-faqs

I wanted to add pictures but can no longer add pictures as I added over 1000 during my 6 years in the forum.

Hey there @Candlestore! I found the pesky lil permission that limits the number of uploads you can make. Would you mind logging in and out and trying to upload a photo again to confirm I got this updated properly? Thank you so much! 😊

Thank you it is working now, guess it was a hidden setting (permission) that you were able to locate  🙂  Thanks

@_Violet Thank you, I followed the steps, but after that I can't enter the weight when I put up an item. The weight section is greyed out. I will go back and look at it again, I may have missed something.

@_Violet  When I go and change the weight it changes the sold by weight, which I assume would be for products like candy that is sold by weight.  What I would like is just change the .lbs to ounces.  Our clothing weights 4-6 ounces each. It is not a big issue, I just thought if there was a easy way to change it I would.

@rtfulk ;

The column you have circled is for the Sell by weight if there is one.  You can hide this row by choosing the + next to Unit Cost in the Right upper corner of your image to Hide that row.  My Weight column is completely Blank now and does not even show the 0.00 lbs like yours does

Here is how my Widget is setup:

widgetoz.png20250411_162928.jpg

My Weight column below is even blank for this but my Unit Cost is showing /oz.

Since you selling clothes of 6oz or 8oz but not by the LB are you wanting to put the weight of the material for the item?  Like for a Description of how heavy or light the items material is?  The weight column is for Items Sold by weight like candy as you mentioned before.  It is not meant to be a Decriptor of the fabric used for like 4-6 ounces.   I think you would need that in the Items Name such as Kids shirts 4 oz   or Kids Shirt 8oz.  You might be even able to use Option sets if you sell both 6 and 8 oz shirts.  This would create Variations instead.

@Candlestore Thanks for the info. I think I will just leave it the way it is. I can get close to the ounces by doing .05 lb. and .07 lb. I was just hoping there was a easy way to change it.
