Create multiple site subcategories all at once?

I'm building my site now, for gemstone jewelry, and I want my customer to be able to search by gemstone (it's all I use, real gemstones). At the moment I have over sixty gemstones. It seems the only way I can add them is one by one, and then I have to move them, one by one, into the Browse by Gemstone category. Obviously this is very time consuming.

Is there a faster way?

As a thought, I added four gemstone subcategories manually. I also have added five pieces of jewelry, just as place holders for testing. One each bracelet, anklet, necklace, pendant, and earrings. I have them each in their own category, and then for the bracelet I also added it to the four gemstone categories (so now it's in five categories). I thought that if I exported the inventory into a .csv, I could see how it shows the categories, then add all the categories to a piece and then import the .csv which would then in turn automatically create the other categories.

However, the .csv has a single Category column, and it's empty.

Edit: The Category column, I've figured out, is different than the Site Category. There can only be a single Category for an item while that item can also be listed in multiple Site Categories.
