Modifiers and services

I can see by starting this thread that this has already been a much requested feature and discussed problem!  Square are you listening?

I have read the other threads that suggest use variations instead.

Variations only work for specific instances.

Modifiers are like an added upgrade to a variation.  This is really a frustrating problem that we deal with.  It causes angst for our customers because they book services that are really modifiers and then we have to tell them that they can't just book that by itself.

In our specific instance, and I know this would be the same for a number of people, we are a dog grooming salon and have a service item of for example "Spa Pamper" (a bath and blow dry) with variations, with different prices of:

  • small,
  • medium and
  • large dog sizes

and we want to add modifiers of

  • Flea Treatment,
  • Magnesium Spa Pamper,
  • Tooth Brushing

services that are upgrades, where one or more can be chosen, or none, are the same price for each variation that we have, and cannot be booked as a stand alone service but are essentially modifiers for the services that are being booked.  Modifiers deals with this perfectly.  Except it doesn't work!

Square stupidly allows us to create these modifiers for services.  It does not however allow the modifiers to be booked from either the appointments view of the browser nor from the customer facing online view.  But if I do a transaction from a virtual terminal, or from the iOS app tadahhhh, there are the modifiers for each service I select.  This is just bad coding and even worse testing.

The important differentiator with modifiers is that another service must be booked first.  These are upgrades, not a stand alone variant.

Our current work around is to have them as a separate service with a big description that basically says "due to the inadequacies of the software we chose for our business you are able to book this as a stand alone service, but please don't because we won't give it to you unless you book one of either a Spa Pamper, Full Groom etc etc".  It needlessly makes us look unprofessional.

This is not a brand new feature Square.  Just make what you have half implemented work properly please.

Hi @vanityfur,

Thank you for taking the time to share this detailed feedback, and your business's use case with us.

I understand your frustration with modifiers not being available for online bookings, yet seeming so close when you're using the app or Virtual Terminal.

We continue to advocate for all suggestions and feedback we receive here in the Seller Community, and our product team take customer feedback into consideration when it comes to developing new, and improving existing features. That being said, we're not able to guarantee when, or if a suggestion will be implemented.

If you haven't already, you could consider joining our Beta Community, where we ask Square Sellers to test new features before they get released. In the meantime, we'll continue tracking feedback for Modifiers in this thread.
