Why am I required to send out a coupon to “opt in” for text messages?

Who’s business is this again? My business..,

I’ve tried creating a “subscribe” message & square will not let me send it without a coupon or dollar amount or a % off.
I already discount and now square makes me discount on their terms???
Square works for me. I don’t work for Square, I can choose another company.
I bring in enough fees as a very small business owner, discounts can wreck my business.
It becomes a slippery slope of demanding discounts.
in fact, my clients have already consented to using a text message system, receiving coupon codes, and appointment reminders.
Anyone else have similar issues? Any recommendations?

Your feedback is highly appreciated @serendipity1

We believe that offering a first coupon will help you build your list more quickly by encouraging your customers to enroll. Our data has shown that buyers are 2.5x more likely to sign up when offered a coupon. You also have the ability to customize the offer to an amount you think will be attractive. When the customer returns to redeem the coupon, you’ve made your first sale from Text Message Marketing!

Your thought process makes absolute sense to me and for that, I recommend you submit a Feature Request here. This will help our product team get visibility and track other Sellers' interest in your request.

Important: When submitting a request, make sure to include the desired feature, and provide the details of how this feature will help your business succeed (how would you use it and what you expect from it).

I’m not operating a semi-fast food, cafeteria restaurant business, where a $5 coupon will entice people to “ENROLL”.

“Your Market Research” doesn’t have any validity with my business…
How long have you been doing market research in regards to my specific business?
My guess is probably never…I’ve been working in my industry since 1997, have a doctorate degree and a bachelor’s degree in business management, and a “cookie cutter coupon” is a mismatch persona for my business.
You’re making a generalized statement and assumption based upon masses of businesses & I’m being punished based upon your “market research” or lack there of.
Is it because I’m a woman owned business or mainly because I serve women?

Perception is everything in business, life, & relationships.
Obviously, you’re good at taking money but not good at meeting the needs of the businesses you work for. Perhaps you will learn the term “customer experience”.

Thank you
