Please advise making a list modifier required.

Hi there. I will try to explain as best I can.
I am trying to add I high number of variations and I keep getting error to keep variations at under 125.
the way my business model works is the customer chooses design then colour.
I have 12 colours and about 200 designs.

I will be splitting the design sections slightly but with the variation limit I am limited to only 10 designs or less per section which doesn’t work at all for me.
A work around was to add a modifier to choose the colour after which is fine however it doesn’t have an option to make it required on the list modifier only on the box to add own details.
I know I could ask customers to write colour there but then I have to find somewhere to add all the different colours to be easily seen in list form which looks messy.
I maybe being dumb but surely there is a way to make the list modifier required like the box?
thank you in advance

Hey @Echo-84 - welcome to the community!

I'm trying to get my head around what you're explaining - I might need some info on what you're selling though to help me understand.

The way I see it is that these 200 designs are 200 products, then the customer would choose the colour.

I can't see many customers wanting to pick a product then wade through the 200 designs as variations!

I have no idea as the the reason it's limited to 125 but I'm kinda surprised they've coded for that many in the first place.

Thanks Sam,

it’s only one product but with circa 200 design variants.
they will be in separate categories of around 20-25 variants to make it easier to navigate.

so for example they want a print on plate but then have a choice of 10 different colour plates to pop the print on.
I want them to be able to choose the design then the plate colour.
however that limits me to only 10 items per category which seems stupidly small.

My clients have requested the ability to shop online so they can shop a view full range as currently only in person sales and obviously space restrictions.

the easier way aside from using options which is too restrictive on variants would be to add the list modifier but I want to make that a requirement so people don’t accidentally order without stating colour.
sadly they only seem to have it as a requirement if it’s a fill out box.
Not hugely tech savvy with websites but this seems like it should be easier than it is.

Hey @Echo-84

I'm still struggling with this, sorry!

The shopping process in my head would be:

200 designs as products in the category 'plates'

Customer chooses design as the product;

Then chooses colour as a modifier
Maybe chooses size as a modifier too?

Job done?

I really must be missing something here as you obviously have a different idea of how this should work right?

Hi @Echo-84 , thanks for clarifying what you're trying to achieve.

There are currently two different ways to make a list modifier a requirement.

Modifier level

This will apply to all items who have the modifier. If you have a set list of modifiers that you want to apply to multiple items, this is the way to go. From your Dashboard:

  1. Access the Items tab and click on Modifiers.
  2. Click on the modifier you want to edit, or Create a Modifier.
Under Settings, toggle on Customer can only select one modifier.
  3. Hit Save.

Item level

Customising the modifier set directly from the item will only apply modifications to said item. From your Dashboard:

  1. Access the Items tab then Item Library.
  2. Click on the item you'd like to customise.
  3. Scroll down to Modifiers and add a modifier.
  4. Click on the three grey dots and select Customise.
  5. Under Required Modifiers, select 1 and repeat for Maximum Modifiers
  6. Save.

Once you've customised your modifier set, your customers will be required to pick one before adding the item to the cart:

I hope this helps, but let me know if you have any questions 🙂.
