Copy/Paste function not working

Hi

This only happened last night so not sure if this is a temporary glitch.

The paste function for text isn't working. I can copy the text and paste it anywhere else but it won't show up in Site Editor.

This seems to be a Firefox issue as I can paste text in Chrome - the problem is Chrome doesn't seem to like Weebly Editor much at the moment and keeps stalling/freezing etc so I need to use Firefox, ideally.

Issue is with both Paragraph Text & Paragraph Title - neither can be copied and pasted within the Editor.

Has anyone else had this issue and/or knows how to fix it?

Thanks

I have found the same problem starting on the 15th (yesterday). I can paste into the Title field, but not into the Text fields. thank you for the note on the browser aspect; I will give that a try. I have found that Firefox will not let me see posts beyond about 2-3 months, but Chrome has no problem doing so.

@Re-Made That's interesting. I use Chrome exclusively when editing Weebly client sites and have never experienced any freezing issues. This suggests that you may want to do a dreaded cache clean out (yep, you'll lose all your logins and have to do those all over again). Chrome has a particularly tenacious cache memory and I've run into "issues" from time to time that appeared to be Weebly site issues but were all in fact the Chrome cache doing its thing running ghost code. I don't really use Firefox other than as a front-end browser version checker of sites I'm working on so I can't comment on how the Site Editor works in that browser. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari use different browser engines (Blink, Gecko, and WebKit, respectively) and so sites may potentially render slightly differently in each (but, generally, unless you're doing something particularly exotic, those differences should be either non-existent or immaterial). Other browsers like Edge, Brave, Opera, etc. essentially use the same mechanical (open source) underpinnings as Chrome and will thus render pages the same way as Chrome. And of course there's Internet Explorer which has its own engine (Trident) but, if you're still using that obsolete browser either for development or general browsing, it's time for you to get a new computer and maybe join that "Introduction to the Internet" class at your retirement home.

Thanks @PaulMathews -my cache is always kept pretty light and I empty it regularly but no harm doing it again to see if it helps. I checked in the Inspector and there is a hell of a lot of red in there so that might be playing a part too...

@whitemonkey Ugh, editing anything on an Android device is like asking your dentist to skip the anaesthetic because you really want to embrace the drill. When it comes to web design/development or content creation/updates, I'm solely using a desktop-class device for that. For me, mobile devices are primarily for content consumption. Creating (written) content on mobile devices is like tackling a NASCAR race on a 10-speed bicycle; sure, you can do it but you'll probably get to the finish line faster using an actual race car. I presumed that @Re-Made was commenting on her experience with Chrome on a desktop-class device and, there, I've not experienced any freezing issues with Weebly.

UPDATE

I have refreshed Firefox (didn't work) and uninstalled it, wiping all mozilla files from my PC and reinstalled and still doesn't work. This is effectively making Weebly completely unusable in Firefox as I can copy and paste everywhere else so I think this is specific to my Site Editor & Firefox.

I will head over to Chrome or Opera then as not sure what other options I can try - if Weebly people have any ideas, they would be much appreciated, otherwise bye, bye Firefox.

...and this is an issue on other sites I have; this isn't just my main site

@Re-Made I just checked this in Firefox and Chrome. I can confirm that there is a copy/paste issue in Firefox as of the most recent version 90.0. Chrome works fine.

@Adam @Bernadette You'll need to report this as an issue to the Weebly devs:

I copied some random text from a news site and (a) pasted it into an existing paragraph text element on a randomly selected Weebly client test site; (b) pasted it into a new paragraph text element dropped into the page; and (c) pasted it into a new title element dropped into the page. I'm using an up-to-date Windows 10 PC. I copied the random text using both the old school right-click menu and also ctrl-c (this would be command-c on macOS).

Chrome: I highlighted the text in the news site page, copied it to the clipboard and pasted it to the Weebly Site Editor via the Chrome right-click "Paste as plain text" choice. (While Weebly will strip external formatting from pasted text, I like to be absolutely sure that I'm not bringing any external formatting into the paste.) This works as expected in all three paste tests. Chrome version: 91.0.4472.164 (up to date as of this writing).

Firefox: All three paste tests worked fine on the first go 'round. I checked my Firefox version number and it was 89.9. Firefox automatically then ran a browser update (as I say, I don't use Firefox as my main browser so, in my initial test, I was using a prior version of the browser). I restarted Firefox and re-checked the browser version: 90.0. I retried the copy/paste and it no longer functions in the Site Editor. I checked the copy/paste on the front end via a Weebly contact form on another Weebly client site (pasted random text from a news web page into several fields in a contact form on the front end) and that works fine. Finally, I copied text from within a text element in the Site Editor and pasted this to the end of the paragraph in that text element and that doesn't work either. This indicates that there is a Weebly Site Editor paste issue as of the latest version of Firefox that was not an issue in what appears to be the immediate prior version.

@Re-Made If you're using a Windows PC, perhaps try the Edge browser. It's running the same engine as Chrome and so should work fine and may not have the same freezing issues you see in Chrome. Alternatively, download another browser like Brave or Opera (same engines as Chrome) and see if those solve your freezing issue. If you're using a Mac, perhaps try (ugh) Safari. It uses a different browser engine from Chrome and Firefox so that may be useful here.

@PaulMathewsThanks very much for figuring that out; I hadn't thought of which version I was using so makes sense now. Nice one.

Hopefully @Bernadette and @Adam can flag this up so it can get sorted out by the techies ASAP. I am taking a bit of a break from the website so it's no great shakes but ideally will want to edit on Firefox if and when I am back in the groove again.

@Re-Made @Adam @Bernadette This is likely an unintended bug introduced by Mozilla as of the latest update from version 89.9 to version 90.0. Might be a security related issue? In any event, copy/paste was functioning just fine in the Weebly Site Editor in Firefox version 89.9 and presumably all prior versions (and continues to function properly on all other browsers). The Weebly devs will likely need to advise the Mozilla devs that something in the latest version update is interfering with paste in the Weebly Site Editor (and perhaps other parts of the Weebly back-end like the Code Editor which I didn't check). Paste doesn't appear to be affected on the Firefox front end. You can paste content into a Weebly site contact form on the front end, for example (and paste works as before on other, non-Weebly sites in the front end).

Out of curiosity, do you visit any other sites that have rich text editors, and if so, are you able to copy/paste in those with FireFox?

@Adam I tried this on various contact forms, the Codepen code editor, the W3 School code editor, wysiwyg editors like textbox.io, and online document creation tools like Google Docs and Microsoft Word online. Paste works in all of these environments in Firefox.

Interestingly, I tried doing a copy/paste into the Weebly Code Editor css code pane and that works (copied random text from a news site and just pasted it straight into the Code Editor css code pane). So it's not the entire Weebly back-end that's problematic, it's just the Site Editor and specifically, the text and title elements. I also checked a Site Editor element attributes dialog - in my test, I used the Button Element attributes dialog and pasted some external text into the "Button Text" attribute and that worked fine. I didn't check every text-containing element, e.g., block quote, but I'd presume that they will all have an issue with pasted text. So, on first blush, the problem appears confined to the text-related elements. Might be wider in scope than this but that's my quick-and-dirty initial conclusion.

As far as I can tell, no browsers other than Firefox are affected and this does appear to be solely confined to the version update from 89.9 to 90.0 that occurred around July 13. I took a look at the Mozilla version update notes but didn't really see anything there that jumped out at me.

Frustrated as all of you are by the snafu with the latest Firefox update I turned to Firefox Portable. While there is a version 90 update I found version 89 and downloaded it. I signed in to Firefox, all my extensions are available as are my bookmarks. Until the problem of copy and paste is resolved when I am working in Weebly  I'll use the portable version. Portables have worked for me for years and this time it is a time and frustraton saver.

I am having the same issue, and this is highly frustrating. I can paste in every element accept a text box. I am also using Firefox, and this has never been an issue until the last several weeks. I hope Weebly, or Firefox, or whomever is responsible fixes this issue quickly, as I loath Chrome and absolutely will not use it. I will ditch Weebly for a new website builder before I use Chrome.

It looks like there's another update available for FireFox. Can you try updating FireFox again to see if that helps?

Hey Adam,

I'm on Firefox 90.0.2 (the latest version) and I'm still having this problem.  I can't paste into any of the text boxes.  As others have said, it seems like every other function works (i.e. copy, select, etc.).

Having the same issue where I can't paste in Firefox. Also using 90.0.2, this is new issue that has occurred in last 48 hours since my Firefox updated as I was copying and pasting successfully earlier this week without issue. Will look at Chrome and Edge to see if I can get around it but neither are my browsers of choice.
