Contactless and Chip reader firmware update did fried my reader

i have gone through support and they just say buy another contactless chip reader.  that is bogus because if i would have not updated firmware the thing probably would have still worked and now because of a faulty firmware update it prevents me from pairing with the device.

this is a version 1 ie old one.

i had not used the chip reader for like 2 years.  first time i tried it i had to update firmware, and of course it is at a show where i need to take credit cards.  well it failed firm ware update. and when i turn it on and do the reset reader steps it blinks 4 green and 4 red until it dies.  if i am pressing the power button down for 20 seconds it will cycle through the 4 green and 4 red and stop.  then when it states to press the power button it blinks 4 red forever until the device dies.  i never get 4 orange lights or any other combination.

support just kept telling be to redo the steps above either because they have no other answer or they do not care.  all i want is to update the firmware manually like to connect up a usb to the reader and download the firmware.  they have not gotten back with me on if that is even possible but i doubt it.

Hi @johnmc

I'm sorry to hear about your frustrating experience

It seems like you've already exhausted their troubleshooting steps with our support team, but I'd just like to confirm you also performed a factory reset on the Reader?

If you have a chance to run through these steps, let me know if you have any luck:

Delete and Reinstall the Square Point of Sale App:

1) Settings > Hardware > Card Readers > forget all card readers

2. Force-quit Square Point of Sale App

3. Open device settings

4. Navigate to Bluetooth

5. Forget all Square Readers

6. Hold the button on the reader until the lights flash red

7. Reboot the Device

8. Re-launch Square Point of Sale app, wait 1-2 minutes, and re-pair the reader

fyi i have already deleted card readers but the iphone prior to this, do i need to remove the phone also?

basically for over a week of getting this to connect  1-5 done over and over and still nothing

on no 6, so when you state flash red, is that once it flashes red (ie the first time) or it continuously flash red and then stops flashing all together.  i really need specifics since the forced update of flash failed and renders this useless

so what are the steps to reboot the device and what device are you talking about square reader or phone or both?

also how do you reboot the reader
