Discount items only not a whole transaction

Is there a way I can set a discount to ONLY apply to individual items and not to a whole cart of items? in Square for Retail. 

In Shopkeep, I was able to set a discount to be item level, transaction level, or both. 

I want to avoid an associate to accidentally applying a 20% off one item discount to the whole cart. I haven't figured out if there is a way to do that in Square yet.

I understand.  Unfortunately, there is no such setting in Square.  The only workaround I can offer is for you to edit the “restricted” discounts, scroll down to the advanced settings and require a manager passcode in order for them to be added to the cart.

Hi @Jessica-Gaucher.  In the Retail POS, before you click “Add to Cart,” scroll all the way down to the bottom of the item.  You’ll see an Apply Discount button.  Click it and select the discount to apply to that item only.  Note that this ONLY works for percentage discounts, as dollar discounts can not be applied at the item level.  Also, if you don’t use the Retail POS, there is the same item-level discount functionality in all Square POS apps.

I believe that I was not clear in my initial request. I am looking for an option to change the settings of the discounts. I am not looking for directions on how to apply discounts within the cart. 

I am the manager, and I want to set guardrails for my employees who are not always as detail oriented as I am. One of my employees accidentally applied a percentage discount to an entire cart, not to an individual item. 

I want the ability to change the SETTINGS of discounts so that there are certain discounts that can only be applied at the item level and not the cart/transaction level. 

Shopkeep had a much more clear way of differentiating the two.

@Jessica-Gaucher So you are wanting an automatic discount for certain items of categories? This may be what you are wanting to do. You can go to the dashboard, then items/discounts. The click Create A Discount, Enter your discount percentage,In Automatic Discounts toggle on Discount Rules. A window will popup and you can choose Item/Category, Quantity or Customer Group. I would think you would select Item/Category. The you would click on Add Individual item or Category item, From there you would select the item/items or categories. Then when the item is rung up it will receive the discount. You may have to play around with it a little to get it to your liking. Below are a few photos of the steps. I hope this is what you are looking to do.
