Microsoft Bounce Rates?

Has anybody noticed high bounce rates on Square Marketing Campaigns?

In the last week it seems all my email marketing to Microsoft related emails, outlook, hotmail, msn etc have bounced.

Microsofts own website states this is an issue with Sender Reputation (Square) but Square refuse to take any responsibility, are unable to suggest a fix for the issue.

As a result I'm hitting 15% bounce rates all to valid, subscribed and engaged Microsoft related emai addresses. Just wondered if anybody else using Square Marketing is having this issue?

Hi @SimonH,

Thanks for reaching out, and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

We typically see high bounce and spam rates from merchants that have:

  • Purchased a contact list
  • Migrated from another service
  • Have an open web sign-up form without reCAPTCHA enabled
  • A very old contact list
  • Manual sign-up forms (like forms handwritten in-store)

If you believe that any of the above could be affecting your bounce rate, we'd recommend:

  • Do not purchase contact lists.
  • Clean up your contacts from time to time by removing old contacts or contacts that have not made a purchase or visit in the last 12 months. Note: this window may vary depending on the specifics of your business.
  • Use the Square sign-up form to collect emails. Then, replace open sign-up forms on your website with Square’s sign-up forms.
  • Use Square POS to collect emails.
  • Do not use manual signup forms in-store.

I've flagged your concerns with our Marketing team to see if there has been any notable increase in bounce rates to Microsoft emails across the board, however it is unlikely this is the case, as Square monitors for wider email deliverability issues. In any case, I'll let you know what they advise when I have a response.

In the meantime, you can learn more about Square Marketing Reputation best practices, from our support centre article.

Hope this helps!
