Can you restrict discounts to categories?

Hello! Can you restrict discounts to specific categories without applying them automatically? Example: I want to be able to discount drinks and food but not merchandise on the same ticket and I do not want my staff to have to manually add the discounts to each item that is applicable - Too much room for error.

There is a "add discount" option too easily accessible on the main ticket display which applies to the entire ticket anyways which negates the individual item discount anyways.

I simply want to not allow the discount on the entire ticket.   This seems pretty basic, am I missing something? I must be but I'm losing my mind! ha - Thanks!

Hi, @BigRiccs ,

You can apply a category discount automatically by going to Items->Discounts in your dashboard and creating an automatic discount for a specific category.

For instance, we discount automatically if you buy 3 or more drink items and then a different discount if you buy 6 or more drink items.

You can set it to a specific dollar amount or a percentage.

You can even set specific days and/or times that the discount applies (ie. happy hour)

You can also set a date range to start and stop the discount as well as a minimum spend amount and a maximum discount amount.

Unfortunately, that does not solve my problem. There are 3 major problems with discounts that I can't seem to get around...

1. You can use more than 1 discount per transaction, there is no limit. (it's only possible to set max discount value per discount, which doesn't keep you from adding as many discounts as you want)

2. Discounts should not be automatic.  I need to only apply discount to certain products like without automation

3. The 'Add discount' accessibility on the transaction applies to the whole tab, and not per item. Creating a lot of room for error when a busy barista is trying to only discount certain items.

Am I the only fast casual/ cafe that has issues with this? Is it me? lol

1. Yes, we have all been wanting for a long time a restriction on how many discounts can be applied to the cart at once.  I do understand you there.

2. Using the example I provided, you can apply discounts to specific products or product categories automatically. And then it'll only apply to those products.

However if you do want to do it manually for just specific products, in the cart, you can click on the product and apply the discount specifically to that product.

3. Again you can apply it to specific product or products by clicking on the product and then clicking apply discount and choose the discount that you want for that product.

Hope that helped! 🦋

It still doesn't remove the human error factor. And the "add discount" button on the main transaction screen only compicates things.

Discounts should be highly customizable, and per category. Not automatic unless peferred to be for sales/grouping purposes.

Bottom line: Discounts are clunky and need better customization options for more scenarios.

Additionally, if you add a discount with dollar value vs. % value - the dicsount can not be found on the individual items and it automaticly applies to the entire transaction (although doesn't actually give more than the dollar value discount in the total ... it's a glitch.

Yes. These are all very good points and I agree that these should be much more customizable. Hopefully the powers that be over at Square will take this information and make some improvements.

Definitely add your recommendations to the Ideate section as a feature request. I will definitely give my vote for it.
