Complicated discount codes

Hi there, I'm trying to create a discount that allows me to charge a specific item for $20 less than usual, as long as the customer is also buying something else from that category.

ie. "Trinket Cake Jewellery Tins - FREAKAZOID" is usually $95, but I would like to create an automatic discount that changes it to $75 when the customer is also purchasing something else from the "FREAKAZOID" category.

Any ideas on how I could structure this?

Hi @illicitempress ,

I see this is your first post so I’d like to welcome you to the seller community!

The discount interface is a little tricky because there are so options and combinations however i thin’ you can do what  you want by using the following:

Create your discount and give it a name, the discount will be an amount, the value $20

Enable the discount rules

Under purchase rules define a quantity discount

The quantity will be 1 and the discount will apply to  all items that will trigger the discount. If this discount is for square online then will need to specify the items individually as category discounts do not work with square online.

Under the discount rule specify buy one get one and set the quantity to 1 - this is important as this changes the behaviour from a blanket discount to an item specific discount. When you set the quantity to 1 you can then specify the item the discount applies to. In this case your Trinket Cake Jewellery Tins item.

The one caveat for this approach is that the discounted item must be equal or lesser value to the qualifying item.

In Australia you also most likely want to apply this discount after taxes.

Hope that helps

Bruce

Hi Bruce, thank you so much for your response! So helpful - I was getting worried as I was only getting canned responses from Square support that did not relate to my problem.

Do you know if there's any way to get around the 'equal or lesser value' rule? Would love for customers to be able to shop a cheaper item eg $50 hairclip and still benefit from the deal, but understand if that's just a limitation of the system at this point.

I've taken a look at the API itself. I find generally the square system is fairly fully featured and sometimes the limitations are purely UI based. I'll have a bit more of a dig around and see whether what you want is do-able via the API. If it is, this confirms it's purely a function of the UI limiting it.

I am a developer in a past life so I may see whether i can whip up a some sort of a separate app to address these sort of shortcomings.

That's totally understandable. Your workaround has solved my problem for now, appreciate your insight on this so much!
