Split Payments Using Square Terminal
Is there any way to split bills using Square Terminal? This was the main reason I bought it, so that customers could pay and split bills at the table, but as there seems to be no way to do this they each have to come up to the till at the counter. Looks like Square customers have been asking for this feature for some time?...

Hi @Ilvino @BernadetteA , I'm assuming we are talking split payments, so when a customer purchases an item or service and they wish to pay part cash and the balance on card. I know it's possible or the Square Register and POS on the ipad as we use it, not sure on the the terminal. I will take a look at my terminal tomorrow and see if it's possible. Unless anybody more familiar with Terminal can step in with an answer.

Hi @doc_choc, thanks for stepping in.
I can confirm that you are able to split payments on the Terminal. The steps are slightly different from the POS on the iPad:
-
tap Charge.
-
Tap X, then tap Split Amount.
-
Choose to Split by Amount or Split into Equal Payments.
@Ilvino, are you looking at splitting a payment in different amounts, or splitting off items into separate bills?
To clarify things a bit, you would:
- Use Split a payment when a party wanted to divide a bill between all customers
- Split items onto a separate bills if a party wanted to individually pay for what they ordered.
While you can't split a bill into separate ones on Square Point of Sale, this feature is available with Square for Restaurants.

Hi @Lou8, @doc_choc, @BernadetteA - thank you all for your input and time replying to me and apologies for the slow response - I've been away from the business for a couple of weeks, so will try and get to the bottom of this now.
The situation is that I use Square PoS on an iPad as our main till point for the wine bar. We also have a Square Terminal connected, which we bought really only to be able to present a card machine for payment to customers at the table.
When we have a straightforward transaction where one customer is paying for their own purchase(s) we can send the payment request to the terminal and the customer can tap on the unit at the table.
But when we have a group of two or more who would like to split the bill into equal parts, then we have to ask the customers to come up to the till point and tap on the card reader connected to the iPad, as the screen is telling me that the Square Terminal option is not available (greyed-out with 'Square Terminal (No split payments)'.
Hope that clarifies my problem?
Many thanks.
