Connecting a domain and redirecting a second one

I have a .com and a .co.uk domain with WIX. The one redirected to the .co.uk site.  I connected the .com site but I don't see how I can add the second name to redirect to the same site.

Thanks for confirming @CTMaggie

So if your current primary domain is .com and you would like to change it to be .co.uk then yes, first you would need to follow the steps in Connect Your Domain to Square Online first.

Just a note that it takes 24-48 hours for your site to propagate after changes are made.

Once this process is complete you can direct the .com domain

To do so, publish your site and then forward any other domains to your primary domain.

To forward a domain in Square Online:

  1. In your Square Online Overview page, go to Website > Domains.
  2. Under the domain you want to forward, select Manage > Manage domain.
  3. Under Destination, select Edit site destination.
  4. Choose the Forward to a URL option and type in your primary domain

I hope this helps 🙂

Hi @CTMaggie, thanks for your post and welcome to the Seller Community.

Are you trying to connect or transfer your domains from Wix to Square? When a domain is transferred, it means you handle everything for your website from one account, including domain hosting and billing. Connecting a domain keeps domain hosting and billing with your current host. When a domain is connected, it means domain hosting and billing are in a separate account from your website.

From what I've gathered you've managed to connect the .com site but you are struggling with the .co.uk?

.co.uk domains cannot be transferred and can only be connected - can you let me know what steps you've taken so far?

Hi Alegra,

Thank you for your reply.

My primary domain, hosted at WIX, was .co.uk. with a secondary domain (.com) that was redirected to my primary domain at WIX. I moved hosting of the .com to SquareUp and connected it to my site but I would prefer the .co.uk domain to be moved as well so I can set it up as the primary domain name. I wondered if its possible to have both domains hosted at SquareUp? Could I then connect the .co.uk as the primary domain and the .com one as a secondary one redirecting to my primary one?

Thank you

Margie

I have the opposite situation.

I have built a Square online site, then upgraded and connected a .co.uk domain. I am not using e mail on this domain.

I am now ready to close my externally hosted legacy site, which is using a .com domain and has a couple of e mail addresses.

I would appreciate pointers to FAQ sections for this.

The .com domain will be transfered to Square. I would like to make this the primary domain and connect the .co.uk as a secondary domain. I will also set up 301 page redirects, from the legacy .com pages.

I will also need to set up a small number of e mail addresses on the .com domain, with alias for webmaster@, info@, sales@ etc. and a catchall mail.

How long should the migration take and how do I set up the email addresses.

Hey @StephenClose, thanks for your post.

Happy to help here.

Who is your legacy site currently hosted by? You can read about Transferring Your Domain to Square here. Most domain transfers will take approximately 7-10 days to complete.

  1. From your Square Online Overview page, go to Website > Domains.
  2. Select Connect domain.
  3. Under Use a domain I own elsewhere, type in the domain name you want to transfer and select Verify.
  4. Select transfer your domain and follow the step-by-step instructions

Once you've finished setting up your domains you can get started with Google Workspace, where you can set up email addresses based on your custom domain names.

@Breffni, I just started a new thread. My legacy site is hosted by Host-It and I have both a .co.uk and a .com domain.

I have been using the .co.uk domain connected to Square Online and have just configured the .com domain to connect to Square Online. I want to leave both domains hosted there, as they have existing email settings.

Is it possible to have more than one 3rd-Party domain connected to Square?

Thanks @StephenClose

.co.uk is a Country Code Top Level Domain which Square does not offer so this would need to be connected it to your site - which you have already done. Can you send a link to that site here so we can take a look?

Top Level Domain (TLD) such as .com, .net, .org and .info. can all be transferred or connected to Square sites.

The difference is that connecting a domain to your site with Square will leave the hosting and billing with the third party (as you will have done with the .co.uk address) or you can completely transfer the domain hosting and billing to Square, which it sounds like you want to do with the .com site?

Let me know if I've understood correctly and if you send me both domains here, I'll be able to check in with our Square Online team here, just to make sure we proceed correctly! Thanks

@BreffniI have disconnected the 3rd-party .co.uk domain from my Square Online site, then connected my .com domain to Square Online this morning and have re published the site. I am waiting for the DNS changes to propagate as I still see my legacy site in my browser.

www.westendembroidery.com

I now plan to leave both domains with my existing supplier, and have them configure the .co.uk domain as an alias to the .com domain. This will retain my existing e mail configuration.

Hi @StephenClose, thanks for letting me know, I had a look and couldn't see the .co.uk domain and that's why I had asked.

The DNS records should take about 24-48 hours from when you initiated the process.

Let me know if there's anything else we can help with here!

@Breffnican you please check the SSL certificate. I am seeing the security risk alerts in Firefox and Chrome browsers.

(I know it is just over 24 hours since I first published to my http://www.westendembroidery.com/ domain).

@StephenClose, I had a look at your DNS records here https://who.is/dns/westendembroidery.com.

westendembroidery.com A 21600 199.34.228.164

www.westendembroidery.com A 21600 199.34.228.164

are both correct.

But I also noticed:

westendembroidery.com AAAA 21600 2a00:1a90:4002:1::14

If your third-party domain’s DNS records include an AAAA record, our service will not recognise it and the domain will not populate your website when it’s searched in a browser. To fix this, remove the AAAA record from your domain’s DNS and allow the changes to propagate (usually within 24–48 hours).

I believe that may be what's causing the delay here.
