JavaScript - BibBase - jquery

Hello,

I am rather new to Weebly and have run into a problem with the JavaScript integration. I got a short code from BibBase and when I enter it into the embed code box in the editor mode, everything seems to work. However, when I visit the page on the published site there is some flickering and I can't even scroll down.

The folks at BibBase think it may be related to the old version of jquery used by Weebly. Is there any way to fix it?

For a non-programmer like myself...

Here is a link to the specific page

https://www.nirotem.com/publications.html

Thanks!

Nir

@nirotem I found a research website where each of the researcher profile pages use BibBase to embed their academic publications. Here is the profile page for one of the researchers:

https://www.arcticcirc.net/researchers/jan-karlsson

If you scroll down the page, below the regular text and image profile content, you'll see the BibBase-powered publications list for this researcher (the other project researchers have a similar page layout). This site was built on Squarespace so it appears that BibBase will work just fine on that platform (at a minimum, with respect to the Squarespace theme they employed for their site). The Squarespace Personal Plan will likely suffice for all your site needs and runs about $12 per month (https://www.squarespace.com/pricing). The Squarespace site editor is similar to what you see in Weebly and you should be able to recreate your site fairly quickly by copying and pasting blocks of text from the Weebly site to Squarespace site pages (a suggestion: if you're using Google Chrome as your browser, paste your Weebly content into the Squarespace page editor via the right-click "Paste as plain text" option to avoid bringing external formatting into the site page). The Squarespace knowledgebase (https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206795137) is exceptionally good and this is a very popular platform so you'll have no lack of support information from either Squarespace or other media on the internet.

@nirotem I can't help you with your script.  However it seems that you have built the website for getting a job.  You are still a student so you may not have that many publications.  So why not just build a basic website with list of your publications with links to full pdf version.....Yes you may miss the statistics like number of hits, number of times people reference your work etc.

That is just my opinion.

@nirotem If you test your script embed code in a non-Weebly editor like the W3 Schools editor:

https://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_default

Does it work there?

@PaulMathewsYes it does. When I tested the script in W3 Schools it works

@nirotem Okay, so that tells us that, the embed code, in the absence of any other javascript/jquery references should function just fine. This indicates that there is definitely something in the Weebly environment that is interfering with the proper functioning of the BibBase embed.

Weebly loads version 1.8.3 of jquery and BibBase loads version 2.2.4. While you can run multiple versions of jquery on a single page, there exists the possibility of conflict. There is a "noConflict" solution to this but you'd have to make some modifications to the jquery code and that's probably not something you can or want to do. And, it's not a certainty that this is the source of the problem.

In the Chrome code inspector, I stripped out all the page elements (header bar, logo, navigation, etc.) other than BibBase and the scroll problem persists which possibly indicates an issue with the Weebly javascript that fixes the header bar (where your logo and navigation menu reside) to the top of the page after you scroll down the page (you'll see some of this special behavior on other pages in your site where, upon scroll, the header bar changes color from burgundy to white and the navigation menu items change font color from white to black). There's a way to disable Weebly's scripts at least so you can test BibBase in the absence of those scripts but you'll need to modify the page html for that. And disabling those scripts will make that particular page not work the same way as the other pages (mobile behavior, scroll behavior, etc.). So you may solve one problem only to have to figure out another.

Hmmm. Thorny problem. I'm sorry that I don't have a definitive solution for you. My guess is that you're going to have difficulty getting BibBase to work properly on Weebly. Getting Weebly devs to look at this particular issue is likely a dead end as all current development work at Weebly appears to be directed at the Square site builder (since the acquisition of Weebly by Square) and virtually nothing of update significance has been done with the Weebly Site Editor in years (which frankly is a red flag for the longevity of the platform). You might contemplate hosting your site directly with BibBase. To use your own custom domain, as you've done with Weebly, would require you to sign up with their Professional Plan at $20 per month which is a bit steep for a site primarily centered around academic works. I have no idea what their site editor looks like or how flexible it is with respect to building regular site pages, i.e., pages not related to publications or academic works. My guess is that it's not a particularly great tool (I was not able to even find a screenshot of their page editor).

Your other options include checking out other web hosting platforms that may be able to run the BibBase embed without any problems. You can use the usual free trials of most Weebly-similar platforms (Squarespace, Wix, MailChimp, etc.) to test them out without necessarily committing to a particular platform.

@PaulMathewsThank you for taking the time to look at this issue. It's a pity as I am new to Weebly and this integration was probably my only prerequisite in terms of site functionality. It didn't cross my mind to check that it works before setting the site. I believe you are right, and that the Weebly developers won't do much to solve this issue. I will consider moving to another host environment.

Thanks again

@PaulMathewsThanks! I also did a bit of research and I think Wix should work well for my needs. I already set up the site and now waits for the domain transfer. Their preview works well, and I hope it will be the same when the site will go live. Thanks again for your help!
