Best size dimensions for Gallery images

What would be the best size dimensions for Gallery images?

I have tried everything fro 40 pixels wide to 100....

The higher ons get magnified and cropped partially,

while the smaller ones are very grainy and magnified

That little bit of information:

We started using 100x100 thumbnails and recently enlarged to 200x200 thumbnails which look much better, even on mobile devices.        Check it out at http://www.natemcclain.com/portfolio.html

Helped immensely.

Seems so minor but it made a huge difference and impacted positively my site's general appearance.
