Rel=Canonical

I have started using MOZ to help me sort my SEO on my site. One issue I am coming up with is duplicates on my site. Now, whilst I am aware that you can do 301 redirects on the sites SEO page, one part of the problem is that its showing duplicates on the /index.html. So, I have a site which is www.mysite.co.uk and www.mysite.co.uk/index.html. I cant redirect on the SEO page because its a home page. There's also alot of duplicates on the store and blog pages.

Is there anyway to fix this in Weebly, or is it something that I have to put up with?

This is a great question and I'm glad you asked!

Most hosting, whether at Weebly or somewhere else, will have directories configured to load a file as the index when none is specified.  Index.html is easily the most common and practical, though any file could be could be used.  The benefits of this include preventing people from viewing the contents of a directory as well as shorter, easier-to-remember URLs.

Pretty much every CMS or host out there will return these messages because they're all configured this way, though the real-world impact isn't going to be something that tangible.

You could try adding a simple link HTML tag to your Header Code field for your index page if you wanted, though if it was me I wouldn't probably worry too much about it:

Thanks for the information and the speedy reply.

I was secretly hoping you'd say something like this as it was looking to be more trouble than it was worth!

Hello Adam.

I'm a german guy and my english is not so good for his topic. When I understand right than I must to to each side of SEO Settings in the "header code" e. g. <Link rel = "canonical" href = "http://www.nahrungsergaenzungvitamine.de/kompakt-plus.html" /> insert. Is this so correctly.

Hello @life4you!

If you want to use the canonical tag, then you only need to use it for your main domain. Google will pick the secondary pages for you.

The page http://www.nahrungsergaenzungvitamine.de and http://www.nahrungsergaenzungvitamine.de/index.html are the exact same page. If you want to ensure that only one of those is indexed. You must tell the search engines which page to index. To do that go to the "Settings>SEO" tab copy the code below and paste it into the header field.

<link rel="canonical"   href="http://www.nahrungsergaenzungvitamine.de/>

Google and other search engines treat the www version and the non-www version the same.

Replublish your site once the tag is added and saved. Then when the search engines return to crawl your site again, it will see the changes and update the indexes accordingly.

I hope this helps.

I'm a level 1 autistic, so we might have to go "JT:Isaiah 28.10" on this:

For my case, it sounds like my header field needs <link rel="canonical" href="https://www.chinisainnukshopa.com/"> (I came close to parroting from the German website, but I'd probably wind up with the Mother of All Dummkopfisch Snafus if I did).  Let me know if I got this straight.  Danke schön.

That sounds correct based on the instructions above, @C_Innukshopa!
