What is the best size of image for my banner header background images?

[Note: The title of this post has been edited by a moderator.]

If I want to create a header image where do I find the header sizes so that I can create the right sized banner header?

Generally speaking, images that are 2000 pixels wide and 1000 pixels high work best for header or section background images, although it varies depending on how much content you've added to the section and what the actual content of your image is.

Section and Header areas are designed so that the image will automatically fill the entire area.  Sometimes you might need to edit your image to add more negative space around the edges to make the image appear smaller (in situations where you want a specific part of the image to always show).  It also might be possible to do it through theme customization if you're familiar with CSS and HTML.

Depending on the dimensions of the screen and the content you have within your header area, you will see some cropping as the page responds to browser window size. If you make your browser window bigger or smaller you'll likely see the cropping change. You also make see a difference if you increase the height of the section, too.

Is there anyway to go back to making the banners the way they used to be made? This new one is incredibly frustrating, time consuming and definitely not user friendly. Hate is not a strong enough word for it.

Hello tommyboy! Can you tell us a bit more about the features you were looking to use? There have been a few banner iterations.

I used to be able to fill the tall banner with different pictures and arrange them how I want to. Now it only allows me to upload one picture for the banner and to guess the size is a nightmare. The preview in the "edit" section also doesnt show the same crop as after saving the picture.

We updated the image editor earlier in the year because the old one relied on Adobe Flash. Some features of the old editor are not available in this newer editor, unfortunately. If you want to combine multiple images I would recommend doing that on your computer first before uploading.

Good evening Adam!

I am still finding my jpeg images are never the proper size when attempting to upload for my site. Would you be so kind as to offer some better tips/guidance on what the size the jpeg images need to be for background.

I tried going back into Photoshop to resize the jpeg but not having great success.

Thank you in advance!

How can I make the header size smaller?  I have a small image/logo that I want to put in the header, but even re-sizing it as small as possible, the header is too big with a lot of blank space.

Click on your header section so you see that the whole section is highlighted, then click and drag the small blue circle you see at the bottom. You can use that to shrink the height.

What if it still doesn't get small enough?  I have the same issue but haven't found in the HTML how to make it any smaller.

If you don't find rules for it, you might need to write your own to override whatever styling its using. You can find out what is currently applied by using Chrome's Web Inspector.

I guess I was a little vague.  I don't know what setting in which file to look for the settings to change the header size.  I don't know what to look for when I run the inspector or how that helps.  I guess I was looking for more detailed help.

When I check your site on a mobile device your banner is smaller than on a desktop, @RyanGirl. Did you change themes after posting this?

Eliminate the banner completely and upload an image of your banner instead. Takes all the frustration out of the inability to resize the banner by pixels. The option used to be there, but now you can only crop the banner image, as opposed to resizing to fit properly. A real PITA.

Thanks for your post, @sonicsz. Something with your custom theme is breaking the option to make your sections larger. Our Customer Success team does not assist with custom coding issues, which is why they said they couldn't help with that. One thing you could try doing is switching to a standard theme, changing the height of sections to what you want, then re-doing your custom edits to make a new custom theme from that.
