My site copy is stuck copying. What do I do?

[Note: The title of this post has been edited by a moderator.]

I would like to rebuild my site with a different theme.  Completely start over.  I read in the community forum to copy site and the progress bar is not moving.  How long does this take?

Site copies can sometimes take some time to complete. If it seems like it has been stuck for a while, try logging out and waiting a while and checking back later. If it's still like that after 24 hours, contact our support team so they can take a look.

Which site did you copy, @lisalisa1? I see 10 sites in your account, and it might not let you make another copy since you can only have up to 10 sites in an account.

Thanks that was exactly the problem. I had 10 sites alrady and so it couldnt duplicate. I've binned one of the other sites to make space for my duplicate now. Thanks!!

Yes, you can copy a website. It's very import function. Just go to the dashboard. On the left are the names of your websites. Put the cursur on the 3 dots in the square and then left click. There you can copy the website. It gets copied with text.

Hi, I've been trying to copy one of my sites, which is quite large, but it has scrambled the site in the copied site - all the pages are out of order, some have been duplicated, and those that were further down the tree have all been put at the same level. Is this normal in a copy - that it's a rough copy, not an accurate one?

I copied a website a few days ago. I found in the copy Weebly had created a new, empty page. Not only that, on the original and copied websites most of the pages are split into 2 parts. The text on the right hand part became either large or gigantic in both the copy and orignial website. That meant editing 100+ pages!

I'm not sure if it happened immidiatly. I only noticed it a few days later. Not only that on the left side links in the text, but only links, became gigantic.

A day or so after I had copied the website I changed the Theme in a 3rd website. Maybe this affected my sites. I found if you take the same Theme for 2 or more websites when you change something in one the other is also changed in some ways; and over the years it's easy to forget which Theme you original used for which website if you have numerous sites. Wierd and annoying!!!

Like I said, the Websites are kind of linked to each other if you use the same theme for 2 or more websites. That includes copying. I have just reedited text size on 2 websites. When I do something on the one it changes things on the other. Costing me hours of work.

Do you have a custom theme @KG100? This doesn't sound like intended behavior.

Yes, I've had this for years. When I use the same Theme for more than one website they are often linked. When I change something in X website, the change transfers to the other Y website.

This I now have with 3 websites. As I said, I have lots of pages in 2 parts, left and right. When I change the size of text in the rightm of website X the text in the right of Website Y changes too. But not as I would like. While I am downsizing the text of Website X because it is too big, the text of website Y is getting smaller and shows up tiny when published. Now, rather than change the size, I am going to take out the formating with the Tx. This means that as it is my CV and lots is in Bold, which will become normal i.e. not bold although the color and links will not change. As I will have to do this with about 100 pages it's a pain!!!

I hope this is the solution to my problem!!!

Take a look - I haven't changed things yet.

This website is now Ok. I had to change the size of the text of pages on the right. But I don't know if it will change after I have worked on the first 2 websites.  https://www.englischlernen-online.com/

I've got the same problem!!!  I don't see that Weebly ever responded to you.  Did you find a fix?

No, I don't have a fix.

When I change some of the features in one website it changes all my 4 websites.

I have gotten used to it but it's not ideal.

It should be possible to change the name of the Tenplate chosen i.e. website 1, website 2. etc. and that the change only effects the websites using the same tenplate name.

However, I don't know if this is possible.

I have an idea:

  1. If you have less than 10 websites, copy a website. Go into edit copied website.
  2. Click on Theme
  3. In "Theme" click on HTML (bottom left hand corner).
  4. It opens and at the top left hand corner you will see the name of the "tenplate".
  5. Click on the tenplate name with left hand mouse and it should mark the name
  6. Click again with the left hand mouse and you should be able to change the name now.
  7. See if you can change the name of the copied website tenplate without it changing the name of the original website.
  8. I hope that's understandable. I will give that a try myself when I have time.

However, at present I am more worried about the EU data protection stuff and cookies and cookie banners.

Best

K.

This is spot on, @KG100 If you copy a site that is using a custom theme you will need to rename the theme using the steps you outlined. Otherwise any changes made on the copy site will reflect on the original.

Hi @Bernadette ,

The same solution was mentioned by @Adam in this thread: https://community.weebly.com/t5/Lounge/Editing-website-copy-is-also-changing-main-website/m-p/215832...

but it doesn't work for me. Like I wrote in the thread above I renamed the copy of my custom theme and made some changes to the CSS but when I checked my main custom theme it had "inherited" the new name and the changes made in the copy was applied as well.

But, I am not able to edit option, besides the upgrade button, after clicking on the edit website.

what could be the problem? or do I need to upgrade the website to access that feature?

Hello Adam,

Thank you for the immediate reply and I am glad.

I want to make a copy of the website so that changes on one website should not reflect on others and once all modifications are done, then I want to publish the website with updated changes.

During this flow, I am not able to see the copy option after clicking edit,

but in the youtube link

https://www.google.com/search?safe=active&rlz=1C1NHXL_enIN801IN801&sxsrf=ALeKk01l6UKmwAs9auun_8mkLu9...

I can see the edit option to copy the webiste.

Here is the attached document for the process I followed, attached in 2 screens.imageimagethere is no edit option on this page

Copying a site is done from the dashboard rather than within the site editor. It's a little goofy if you only have a single site, though. On the dashboard, click on the menu on the top right and choose the Add Site option. Go through the steps until you can exit the website editor. Once you are back on the dashboard, click on the grey sites dropdown on the top left. You should see both sites in your account. Click on the "..." button for the site you want to copy, then choose the copy option there.

Regarding copying Websites:

I have been doing this for a long time. It's easy but!!!

Now I have 3 website all linked to another. Sometimes when I change something in one, it changes the settings on another. In March I had to go through about 80 pages becuase I changed the size of fonts on the right (I have 2 collumns on the page) of my page manually. This then also changed the right hand collumn of pages in another of my websites (maybe both others, but I can't remember).

I have tried to change the name of the Theme.: i.e. Go to Theme (next to Build and Pages) , click on edit HTML / CSS and then you will see, directly under CODE Editor, the name of the website Theme. So they each have a different name but then the Theme Name changes for each of them and they still have the same name.

I only have one site and I have tried this several times but the only site that I can seem to make a copy of is the junk site that I made so I can get the "copy" option in the dashboard. I shows me the option to copy my original site but when I click it it makes up copy of the junk site????

Hi @astackhouse I only see one site in your account. Can you please clarify what you mean by "junk site"? I just want to make sure I'm looking at the right account.

Does the page confirm you have successfully edited/saved the theme you are working on? Can you post a screenshot of what you see when the theme name is changed?
