How do I transfer ownership of a site to another account?

I've been working on a site for a couple of weeks and the person I've been creating the site for wants to buy the domain, but it will not let him because he's not the owner of the site. Does anybody know how to transfer ownership?

Hey @Tristan!

Is that the only site in the account, or are there others? If it's the only site, you can simply change the email address and password of the account to something else.

If you have other sites in the account, contact our support team and they can move a single site to a new account using an email address not in use by any other accounts.

I have the same question!  I am a student and graduating from school so want to transfer the site I created to my teacher who can modify it for next year, as they want to continue using what we built for our school.  How do I assign ownership of just this ONE site (I have others on my ID) to my teacher (who also has another weebly site on her ID)?  I hope I don't have to recreate the entire site for her on her ID.

Hi @AKennedy,

You would have to open a support ticket (https://hc.weebly.com/hc/en-us/requests/new) giving us permission to move the site from your account into a new account with an email address not affiliated with any existing Weebly account. So if your teacher has a different email address they can use to log into a new account, we can take that one. Please be advised that store and membership features do not transfer over and would have to be recreated in the new account.

Hi Brodie,

I want to know the best way to start off with a new client. Would this be the ideal (path of least resistance):

1. Start a new account with a new email address of mine

2. Create client website

3. When website is finalized, change the email address and password and provide this information to my client.

4. Done?

You mentioned below "Please be advised that store and membership features do not transfer over and would have to be recreated in the new account." This would not be the case for the scenario mapped out above as it's not a new account but just a change in email and password, correct?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Cheers,

Christine

Hey there Christine! Just checking in, have you considered using the Designer platform for Weebly? It's made with creating client sites in mind, which might help the transition go a bit smoother for you.

Would you please add DIRECTIONS to your How-To answers? It's all well and good to say "yes what you want to do is possible," but that begs the question HOW.

Hey there Ntkelly2016! Our support team will handle most of the details. It's important that you have an unused email available for a new account to be made under, but definitely don't make the account yourself. Other than that, they can go over the details and do the moving for you.

So, do store and membership features get transferred over to a new account holder if there is only one site in the account?

Yes, if the site is moved into a new account all of that will go with it.

@lindie, tickets can take up to 48 hours under normal circumstances to receive a response, sometimes unfortunately more when the queue is particularly heavy. I've found your requests and placed them in my personal queue to address this morning. Please reply to the request for information I send you to expedite the matter.

Hi Brody. I am new to this. I signed up and paid for the Pro weebly account thinking this was where I design a website. However the video tutorial I was watching was showing a preview button in the top right hand corner of the BUILD page. I then realised that there is another service called weebly design. I had to register to use this service with another email. The problem I have is that I had already registered the domain name using weeblys domain registration service in my Weebly Pro account. I think it cost about $24  for the domain.

Once I finish designing the site in Weebly Designer will I be able to use the domain that I registered in my Weebly Pro account? Can I link them together?

Cheers

Hey @Dazza73,

We can refund in your standard account as appropriate, and with the proper written permissions (from the email addresses that are connected to the account and/or listed as the domain registrant), move the domain billing from your standard account to your designer account. Just reach out when you're ready!

The weebly web site I am accessing (but did not create) uses my email as my log in. Must I create a different email and account in order for the 'owner' / creator to transfer this account to me?

We can't transfer sites between existing accounts, so we'd need an email address not in use by another other accounts. If you haven't yet, I'd recommend contacting our support team so they can explain the process for you @DeeDee:

I don't understand why a transfer of ownership requires it to go to a completely new to Weebly email account. I have created a site for my daughter, and now she is ready to take it over and make it her own. In order to see what I had been doing, I invited her as an admin and she has used her regular gmail account. So, it seems I can't transfer ownership of the account to her, and instead she'll have to create a new to Weebly email to use?

Are there any other sites in the account your daughter currently has? If not, she can change the email address on the account to something else (even something that doesn't exist), which would free it up for use in making a new account for the transfer.

I tried doing this and got a message saying "This email address is already in use by another account." What do I do here?

If she was only using the login to access the editor in your account then she can put in any email. If she uses Gmail she can even add "+anyword" to the end of the first part of her email address. Example:

[email protected]

[email protected]

I hope that makes sense! It's a little confusing, but it's a super easy way to alter the email she currently has on file. Are you still going to be logging into your account? Maybe it would be easiest to update your account info to hers.
