How do I transfer ownership of a site to another account?

I've been working on a site for a couple of weeks and the person I've been creating the site for wants to buy the domain, but it will not let him because he's not the owner of the site. Does anybody know how to transfer ownership?

Hey @Tristan!

Is that the only site in the account, or are there others? If it's the only site, you can simply change the email address and password of the account to something else.

If you have other sites in the account, contact our support team and they can move a single site to a new account using an email address not in use by any other accounts.

Our Customer Success team will need to handle that for you, @pol83. You can submit a ticket to them to request that here:

On this same topic then, if I want to transfer one site to another owner but keep another site on my account, can I still be an admin on that first account after it is transferred? For example, I am the admin for a service organization but need to transfer that site to our generic email account so that several members can have access. I also have a personal site on that account so I can't just change the email. I will still need to be an admin on the SO site until someone else comes along to assist with it. Is that possible?

Hi Adam - Can you clarify why a website can only be transferred to an email not affiliated with another weebly account?  I wanted to consolidate a few school websites under my account so that I can manage them effectively, but it sounds like that is not possible?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike. In order to transfer a website, it must be done on the backend by a rep. Since they have to create the account during the move, the email must be free and not already associated with an active Weebly account.

I have multiple Weebly accounts and I want to transfer one of them to the other (so the email that I want to transfer to is allready in use).  Is this possible?

My company recently asked exactly this same question to the support team. We bought a product from another company and wanted to transfer its website and domain to our own Weebly account, as the previous owner had several other websites in the same Weebly account.

We got the instructions below for transferring the website to a new account (yes, you cannot transfer to an existing account... go figure).

Just check the instructions. It won't take long for you to realize that you, the paying customer, are doing all the work that a well-written back-end script could easily do. Multiple steps with high risk or error and no warranties. It's on you.

Too complicated? No problem, Weebly reminds us that "The site can be rebuilt entirely from scratch in the new account". Thank you, I love wasting my time!

@weebly: Please get your *&$*&% together: hire a decent backend developer and offer this obvious feature ASAP. I'll be frank: if I have to rebuild the website from scratch, it won't be using Weebly!

Hi Xxxxxxx,

Thank you for contacting Square Customer Support. To answer your question I have included some instructions to better serve you.

Thank you for reaching us about moving your website to its own account. There will be several details to note to make sure this process is smooth for everyone. First, we’re not able to move sites between existing accounts, but we can move the website into a brand new account. Also note we can only move one site to one new account. There isn’t an option to move multiple sites to one new account.

IMPORTANT: Before we complete the site move, please be aware of these important impacts.

IMPACTS

1. eCOMMERCE: Ecommerce features do not move (e.g. online store settings, items, orders, etc.). If you need any ecommerce features moved (like items/orders), be sure to export them from your online store as CSV files, and download those CSV files emailed to you before you respond to this email giving us permission to move the site. If you request any CSV files from your online store but do not download them before we move the site, those CSV files will break, and you will lose those items/orders.

2. THEMES: If you have a custom-coded theme, please export it into a ZIP file before we move the site. You do this by going into the custom HTML/CSS section of the editor, and selecting Export Theme in the bottom left corner.

3. CONTRIBUTORS: Contributors you’ve added as site editors will lose all permissions to edit or make changes to the site. The new account owner will need to re-invite editors to restore those permissions.

4. MEMBERS: Membership features do not move. If you have members in your membership section, they will be lost. It’s best to export your member list as a CSV file, and download that CSV file before we move the site. If you request a CSV file for your member list, but do not download it before we move the site, that CSV file will break and you will lose your member list.

5. APPS: Installed apps from our App Center cannot be moved or copied. They will need to be re-added/re-purchased in the new account.

6. PUBLISHING: The website will become immediately (re)published when the site move is complete. The new site/account owner can unpublish it from the new account if necessary.

7. MARKETING: Your mailing lists and previous email campaigns with Weebly Promote do not move over when the site moves.

8. PAID PLANS: If you have a grandfathered Pro Account, the plan will not move with the website, making the website “Free” when the move is complete (all other plans besides Pro Account do move, however).

9. DOMAINS: The website will require a paid plan to publish it to a custom domain when it moves to the new account. You will also still own any domains you purchased through your account connected to the website, as they do not move with it. Be sure we get your express permission to move the domain as well.

10. EMAIL: You will still own any emails (Google Workspace) you purchased through your account connected to the domain, as they do not move with the website. Be sure we get your express permission to move the email(s) as well.

11. BILLING: The new site/account owner will become responsible for billing once the site move is complete. If applicable, they would also become responsible for billing of the domain/email(s).

12. IRREVERSIBLE: This site move is irreversible, so we recommend copying the site before proceeding should you need a backup for any reason.

  1. If you understand these impacts, and DO wish to move forward with the site move, here’s what you can do:

First, determine an email address that is not already associated with any other account with us. Then, reply back with the following:

“Yes, you may move the website zzzINSERTdomainHEREzzz, along with the domain name and email (Google Workspace) for zzzINSERTdomainHEREzzz, to a new account under the email address zzzNEWemailADDRESSzzz.”

Upon moving the site, the new account will automatically be created (please do not create the new account beforehand). Then, once completed, we will send you an email confirming it’s done, as well as an email to the new site/account owner with their login instructions.

  1. If you otherwise DO NOT wish to move forward with the site move, here are your alternate options:
  1. The site can be rebuilt entirely from scratch in the new account.
  2. You may consider using Editors (which you can configure in the site editor) to assign someone else as an administrator for the site. The other party can log in using their own email address and password, and edit only that site without having access to the rest of the account.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance and have a great day!
