Using Square with Prohibited Goods

Question regarding prohibited goods. I was using Square at in a brick & mortar gunstore, I didn't realize when purchasing the Square registers that gunstores were prohibited, I didn't think about there being possible limitations to what you were selling so didn't know to check for it. (Lesson learned) I recently had credit card processing disabled on the registeres I have, but the registers appear otherwise to still function as usual for cash, check, and gift card transactions.

So my question is, can I still use the registers to manage cash, check, and gift card transactions while processing credit card transctions via another network or do I need to find a new home for my registers and move to another POS system? (not ideal as we had them just long enough for all the staff to get used to them)

I did a bit of searching and was unable to find a answer to this.

Thanks,
John

Hi @John-C - Thanks for taking the time to ask this question. Terms of service can be confusing, so I went ahead and asked our team who deals with these issues.

They said that you wouldn't be able to purchase any more gift cards, but if the stand/register still works for cash, you can use it in this instance. You also will still be able to refund gift cards as needed if you’d prefer.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hello @katieand,

Thank you for replying, it looks like gift cards continue to work when making purchases and can be loaded using a cash payment method. Are you referring to being able to purchase new physical gift cards through Square in the future (ie get more printed / mailed to us?)

Also, would we be able to return the square stands / card readers for a (partial) refund?

Best Regards,

John

It looks like you just won't be able to purchase any more gift cards in the future.

Since there are a few factors to consider for warranties, I suggest you give our team a call. They'll be able to guide you through that process and let you know if you're eligible.

Just go through the flow at the above link by clicking "Other," then click "I don't see my issue" (in blue at the bottom) of the next page. Then'll you be able to pick call and find the phone number and your customer code.

Hello @katieand

Thanks for the information and the link, the phone suport link you gave me says that phone support is not available for my account.

Do you know why this might be?

Best Regards,

John

Based on other times that has shown up I would assume since your account has been found in violation of the terms of service all inquiries need to go thru email so that there is a "paper" trail for documentation of conversations.

Hi @John-C - I think your account wasn't set up all the way or it's what @VanKalkerFarms refers to so that's probably why you don't have a code. I'll private message you some info for returning equipment.
