How can I price the same item on POS differently in the Ecommerce Store?

Hi All!

I have all of my retail items in my POS library and in my online store. I'm trying to offer "free" shipping in my online store by increasing my item pricing to cover the shipping costs. Unfortunately this has all come about because Square continues to ignore the myriad of requests to make RTS rates a free feature for all levels of accounts just like all the other major online store vendors have done. But I digress, anyway the syncing of an item causes the pricing increase in the online store to impact the POS item pricing and thus the customer is paying the increased cost to cover shipping even though they are buying in person. The last question I saw about this in the community indicated this was a feature request two years ago, yes that's right two years ago. So anybody have a workaround for this issue?

I do not know of any way to have pricing one way in-store and one way out of store when there is a sync link up between the two for inventory purposes.

With that said, we offer free shipping over $100 and a flat rate shipping of $8 under $100. We find that it all sort of washes out.

Thanks Dina for the input, so if I turned off inventory tracking I wonder if that would allow the pricing change. I agree about the free shipping and flat rate pricing but for us it gets tricky when one customer buys several items because of the weight. I’m spending today trying to figure this out one way or another.

How do you handle sales tax? I have my items set up to always add sales tax for online sales, but when I sell in shop the sales tax is included.

Hey @SBD ! Okay so I am not a retail store, but hear me out. Currently you are going in and constantly adjusting the price for your items correct? So you must have a manageable enough variety of products that you are adjusting individual prices per items. Okay here is where I hope you can follow and I make sense.

We are a Tea and Coffee shop and we just recently launched our online ordering system through Squares E commerce, but before that we were catering and serving drinks at different pop ups where we would take our Square terminal. Because we don't have "multiple locations" all of our menu items are synced. Okay? Okay. Now is where I will try not to lose you. Our online ordering has specific items on it. It does not have all our bakery items, or merchandise, or secret menu. So we are able to choose what items we want online and what we do not. The items we choose to have online are Synced with that item in our shop, so our price, and size options and modifiers for that specific item are all the same. For us that's fine because the customer is picking up their drink, but Thats not the case for you. I hope you're still with me.

Now when we cater events, our options are limited. We normally have one size but the price may be a little higher because we are having to pay for the labor and gas and materials that go into catering, so we cant have those same price as we do online or in shop. We will create separate items for catering with their own options and prices.

Here is an example

In shop we have cold brew for $4 and options of adding different flavors and milks. Item title is Cold Brew

when we cater we have cold brew $5 with a single flavor and milk option. Item title Market Cold Brew

Im not sure if youre able to have categories on retail, Like category Blouses with all those options or Jeans with all those options, BUT if you are, then you just add the proper item into the category for in shop and then you add the online priced one into your online shops categories.

I REALLY hope that makes at least a little sense.. That's our workaround! Please, Please, let me know if you have any questions or if that just doesn't make any sense or will not work for you at all.

Cheers!

It comes down to how many items @SBD is talking about. If only a handful, is simple to call them something different. We too do that for events where we have a different drink price and put them in an "Event" category that does not get looked at in the shop. But if all the items are intended to be also sold online, and there are quite a few.....

.... maybe simplest to make an "Online Store" location and I think I saw another thread about exporting items to a spreadsheet, updating the pricing and then importing into the new location. That is the only way to keep the pricing separate that I can think of - without duplicating items.

But it does get unwieldy to keep updated, that show up both in shop and online - I have around 200 items that go in and out of stock.
