Does merging customer accounts affect receipt preferences?

Our business has just started getting ready to use Square Marketing and is currently collecting customer's email to start a mailing list. My question is - if I merge customers who are currently in our customer directory with collected emails - when that customer comes in to purchase something in our store and checks out, will their reciepts go to their email now since I have collected the emails? Or is that something that has to be done on their end? I would like to merge the accounts, especially since we would like be able to offer special deals for our "regulars" - but I don't want to merge the accounts if that changes their checkout process (if that makes sense). Thanks!

Merging your customers together will not change their receipt preferences - they work a little differently. ๐Ÿ˜‰  In a nutshell, when a customer shares their email address during their first payment with a Square seller - we make a connection. Going forward, we simplify things and send future receipts to that same email address. This saves both you and the customer time because they don't have to enter their email or number repeadetly. I merged 2 accounts in error.  Same people but no longer the correct information.  I have done all to correct the receipt email that goes out after each purchase and have not been able to change it.  The current email on the correct profile is not overriding the email on the profile that this account was merged into.  I am curious what will happen if you merge 2 accounts with 2 separate profiles will that create problems down the road.
