Why does the app not accept cards when I'm on tour in the United States?

Curious... the app seems to accept cards in Canada, but then not when I am on tour in the United States.

Is it because I am linked to a Canadian bank? 

I have a US bank account... should I switch connected banks when I switch countries?

Your Square Canada account will not work when traveling outside of Canda.  Same goes for a Square USA account traveling outside of its borders.  The deals with the credit card companies have restrictions on where the accounts can be used.

If you want to be able to process cards in the USA then you would need a Square USA account.  unfortunately just changing banks doesn't help the situation.

Does that mean you would need a USA square reader and a Canadian Square reader ?

Correct, if you would like to use a reader in either country - you would need an account, bank account, and reader for that country.

We already have a Canadian Square account and have been using it for 10 years to take payments in person at our Canadian events. 

We also run two events in the USA each year. If we have a US Bank account and a USA mailing address, can we open a USA Square account and purchase a card reader that will work for our USA events? If so, do we have to go to the USA to purchase the reader?

Great question! Yes, if you have all of those things you can create it when you're in the US. It would have to be under a separate email address too.
