How can I charge for extras and add-ons when customers place a Square Online order for delivery?

Would anyone have a work around or know how to up-charge when customers make special requests or add ons?

My business is losing quite a bit of money for all the special requests we are fulfilling and not getting paid for. Most of the charges are .50-$2. However it seems silly to request such a small amount during delivery. (We are a pizza delivery restaurant). I wish square would allow us to adjust totals for these requests!

Hey @Chiquitas !

Are you talking things people add after the order (which you can't really do too much about unfortunately), or random special requests they add to the order? Something like "Extra pepperoni on half" typed in?

What I've done to mostly eliminate this is to have a "Tweak Your" modifier group. Nothing from that group needs to be selected, but it's there with addon charges as need be.

Example for my coffee shop, I have a "Tweak Your Beverage" modifier that has things like

  • Extra Sweet .75
  • "Kid Temp"
  • Extra Shot 1.00
  • 2 Extra Shots 1.50
  • Sugar Free
  • Add Fresh Grated Cinnamon .25

et al. It definitely does help eliminate a lot of the abuse. For those who do abuse the system still, I'll honor their request once and tell them something like "I did this for you this time, but so you know we do need to charge a little more for that request because ....... " That guilt trip usually stops them from scamming the system again.

Hope this helps!

Hi @Chiquitas ,

we created a Categories named โ€œ Extras and Sidesโ€ , containing each item and price for each any additional item, hope that helps.

Yes itโ€™s for items they add in the special request box. Random things we donโ€™t have an option for as an upcharge. Itโ€™s usually .50-$2 here and there but it adds up over time! Lots of times people donโ€™t have cash on them. Itโ€™s missed revenue and loss of the cost ๐Ÿ˜•

If your tickets print, then I would instruct your staff to save all special request tickets for a week or two and keep them separate. Then when you "have time" ๐Ÿคฃ you could go through those tickets and see what the most common requests are (often it is the same customers asking for the same things on repeat visits) and you can then add a modifier upcharge for those specific things. They might seem random when they come in throughout the day but I'd bet you would see quite a few special requests that would warrant adding a modifier upcharge for once you look at the whole batch of tickets in one sitting.

Hi, thanks for the response! Do you find people actually add their add ons and extras to the bill before they check out?

sorry for late late reply.

Yes indeed, we add any items & extras before we close the bill. If they need anything after paying, a new Ticket is open.
