Gallery image captions : do not display on hover and SEO

Hi,

In a gallery, when I switch off (grey) "Display Caption On Hover", the caption still shows on my website when I leave my mouse over it. Why is that ?

As there is no Alt text for images in a gallery (what a shame), does the caption play any role in SEO ?

Is it what is called "image title text" ? Because it is not a real caption, such as the caption in the single image element, that shows under the image as a normal text.

Thank you !

Hey there! It looks like you're using a series of single Image elements. The captions you're seeing on the page there are part of the Gallery element. You'd want to use that element for your pictures to add the captions as shown.

This topic has been raised some time ago, but I cannot see that it has been resolved yet.

When you mouse-over an image, the captions are being displayed in two different ways -
a/ A 'tooltip' which is a rectangular box of text that appears just above wherever the mouse pointer is. It remains for about 7 seconds.
b/ The caption 'pushes-up' from the bottom however far it needs to in order to show the whole of the caption text. It remains for as long as you mouse-over the image.

After setting the parameters, the results I receive are -
1/ Thumbnail = Partial  and  Display Caption On Hover = On   shows   tooltip and push-up.
2/ Thumbnail = Partial  and  Display Caption On Hover = Off  shows   tooltip and push-up,but push-up is shown permanently.
3/ Thumbnail = Lightbox Only  and  Display Caption On Hover = On   shows   tooltip only.
4/ Thumbnail = Lightbox Only  and  Display Caption On Hover = Off  shows   tooltip only.
(FYI - am using Win 10 and Edge.)

Showing the captions in two different ways is just confusing for the user.
I can use 3/ or 4/ to show the tooltip only.
However I prefer the older method of push-up :-
- as white text on black and slightly larger font, it is easier to read.
- certainly for pics of people, push-up from bottom usually leaves their faces showing.
- by hovering over the image a user can read a push-up caption for as long as they want, useful for long or complex captions.
- and the person raising this topic said that tooltips display his HTML (<b> or &tradeSmiley Wink

I cannot see any way we can choose whichever method of showing captions we prefer. Can we be given a choice?

I spoke to the Weebly helpdesk today and they said that there is no fix. They said that it is to do with accessibility(?).

Anyone have a fix yet?

Apparantly not...the issue still persists... It looks absolutely horrible! I guess no captions on hover then. I'd rather not have any instead of two... I don't see why this can't be fixed...

Feb 2020, and it looks like no solution. Bummer because I have spent around $150 of gallery apps to try if figure out a solution. All I wanted was to have a caption of narrative copy that shows up with each photo, but I dont need an accessibility caption taking up the entire screen on a hover.

I am still having a problem related to this thread – in May 2020. I have set my gallery to Display Captions on Hover and to show Lightbox Only. It does nothing. Captions never appear on hover or otherwise.

Weebly, if you cannot fix the problem, why don't you just simply change the options so we aren't choosing options that do not work? It's honestly ridiculous.

I found a fix. It doesn't make sense, but I did. Too busy trying to launch this site to explain!
