"Tax Name" not displaying properly in Checkout

Hello!

Having fun designing my first Weebly online store/website. I've been able to set everything up the way I want except for ONE thiing...

In the setup taxes area I've customized the tax rate and that works as expected but I've entered a "custom" TAX NAME which appears to be 'saved' but NEVER updates in the Checkout screen. I can go back to 'EDIT' and the correct, custom name is there but in Checkout it only shows the 'default' name: "Taxes (State Tax)"...

FYI...I'm using that feature like many people do to recover CC processing fees NOT as actual TAX so I want it to display what I've entered instead of "Taxes (State Tax)"

PLEASE ADVISE!!!

Thank you!

Hi @Jebep I don't think there is a way to edit the name so that the edited name shows on checkout. For that reason alone it is probably best to not use the tax feature since the current display is a bit deceptive. Also, I'm not a legal representative, but I would highly suggest consulting a local tax advisor to see if you can even use taxes as a way to collect additional fees.

I know there's many users that try to get around this fee, but really you (and others) should be looking at it as a business overhead charge. If you want to pass the charge onto your buyers the best way to go about it would be to raise the cost of your items.

Hi Bernadette (beautiful name, by the way!)

THANK YOU so much for the reply. I appreciate the advice. I'm fully aware of the pros & cons of what I'm doing in that regard but thanks for the reminders...

However, that doesn't quite address the issue! It's not 'user friendly' or intuitive to allow the customization of a label in one area that then does not show up in another area. It's not just a question of customizing it for convenience or identification because that's not needed and, besides, it doesn't show up ANYWHERE except in the EDIT dialogue box! Also, what's the point of being ABLE to customize the tax rate but NOT the 'label' that goes with it. It should be 'one or the other'. Either take away the Custom Text Label in the EDIT area, since it doesn't DO anything, or ALLOW it to DO something and actually populate in the CHECKOUT area! Doesn't make sense to have it both ways. That's all the point I was trying to make...

In addition, while it's true that it is some people's OPINION a merchant should just roll the processing fees into our overhead in MY case it's a CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION/NON-PROFIT and some of my patrons WANT the opportunity to cover that expense and are only too happy to have it pointed out to them when they pay/donate by Credit Card.

So, the suggestion still is: ALLOW the customization of the overly generic "Taxes (State Tax)"

OR

Allow an additional "surcharge" category to be added to the checkout total (BEST, MOST FLEXIBLE solution!)

OR

Get rid of the useless customization of the tax category (least desireable)

THANKS!

Thanks, @Jebep! Smiley Happy

I see what you mean with the tax name. I've never noticed it before because the US tax is automatically setup and calculated. Also, support reps tend to avoid assisting with tax questions, but I do wonder if this is a new feature? I can't find any reference to it in our support channels, and it seems like it would have been brought up previously. I wonder if the name would show up on the order confirmation page.. I can't think of another area (other than checkout) that it would display.

Are you products set up as a service, event or physical product?

Hi Bernadette! Thank you for continuing to help!

I don't blame you guys for wanting to avoid the 'tax' questions. I wish we could ALL avoid them! LOL!  😉

To answer your question I'll say I haven't gone as far as actually testing whether it shows up on the confirmation page...BUT...that would be 'too late', so to speak, right!?

As for the type of product I've experimented with everythiing I can think of! Digital, pick-up, event, ALL of them but it doesn't seem to affect that one, silly little line of text!

And, since you're being so nice! Perhpas this is related... I've noticed the SAME issue with the setting called "In-Store Pickup"! I thought I could use THAT area to add the processing fee as a simple flat rate. A similar thing happens, though! When I set an item for 'in store pickup' and then get to the Checkout page all of a sudden there is a LINE ITEM for what seems like there should be a FEE (charge) but THERE IS NOWHERE TO SET THAT AMOUNT in the settings, at least not that I've been able to find!!! AAAGH!  So, if you'll try it you'll see that allowing an item to be picked up is all well and good but then suddenly in the Checkout sidebar/page a new line appears called "in-store pickup" with a "charge" of "$0.00"! And I don't see anywhere to SET that fee or CHANGE the WORDING for "in-store pickup"! WHY would the designer/editor just randomly ADD that to the Checkout without documenting it in the settings!?

THANKS FOR LISTENING Bernadette...do you get 'hazard' pay for dealing with people like me? YOU SHOULD!  😉

No problem, @Jebep. Setting up an online presence is a lot of work and we're releasing so much new content it's often hard to keep up with everything!! Smiley Happy

If your products are physical products you could create a "shipping" rule that would definitely display the edited title. Or you could add a required product modifier to the product itself.

I'm checking with support to see if the tax title is a bug. It sounds like something is definitely amiss, but I'll let you know!
