Why does my website keep redirecting to .com/defaultsite

[Note: The title of this post has been edited by a moderator.]

When I type in my URL, it automatically redirects it to "...com/defaultsite" instead of my normal homepage. My domain name is hosted through HostGator.

Does anyone know what is causing this?

How do I fix this?

Thanks!

Hello @sleepyowlz!

I see that the name servers for your domain are set to 1and1 domains, who utilize additional records in their DNS settings that can cause issues.

Due to recent changes made by 1and1, you will need to manually delete any IPv6 records, including the AAAA records in your DNS. If you have any difficulty doing this, please reach out to 1and1, as they should be able to assist you.

Once the extraneous AAAA records are deleted, your site should work properly.

Best of luck to you and happy Weeblying!

The above post was almost spot on. It took me a bit to find it, but after deleting the extra record, my site ended up showing up just fine instead of /default 1and1 page.

Manage Domains > DNS Settings > Scroll all the way down to

TXT, CAA, CNAME and SRV Records

Delete the record that is there. This should be empty.

Voila

This fix is no longer working in 2019 and there are no AAAA records. Can you update with the current reason for this issue? Thanks.

This was driving me nuts as well. Without typing it out, this article helped me see it was the proxy settings: https://gardinercolin.com/domain-pointing-defaultsite

I was able to get it done this way.

Let's say you need it to redirect to https://somesite.hosting.com

But it always goes to https://somesite.hosting.com/defaultsite (a broken page)

I fixed it by adding pound symbol, which at least for Big Cartel, works.

Now, https://somesite.hosting.com/#/defaultsite is now brought up, the '#' causes anything afterward to be ignored.

I did this because 1and1 would not let me delete my AAAA IPv6 records.

(Also this site disabling copy and paste and my Mozilla add-on that counters this is silly. Lame forum when you can't copy and paste.)
