I've searched everywhere and can't find this answer.
I have edited my modifiers within Square. They are list type modifiers. Each list is set to choose only one and the top one as default.
BUT - When I choose that modifier for a new online item it goes back to no limit on choices, and no default. Forcing me to go in and change them individually for every single item, instead of the default for the whole modifier.
Am I doing something wrong? Or is this the actual way I'll have to upload over 1000 items?

Ok, just got off chat with support.
"Unfortunately, it is set that way. While the modifier information will stay in tact, Min and Max settings will needed to be added to the item specifically because each item also has its own settings"

@charwood Modifiers in the online dashboard or POS app are treated a little differently in the online store. To keep your modifier customization you would want to build the item in the Point of Sale or square online dashboard and then just add it to the online catalog in the online store dashboard.
1. Do you already have an item catalog in square?
2. Where were you adding new items? online store dashboard or square dashboard?
3. How many modifiers do you have? 1 set for each item? 10 sets across multiple items?
4. What is the nature of the items you sell?
I do restaurants so I have all kinds of crazy modifier setups. If there is a way to break it, I have tried. I'll check in on this thread and see if I can give you some more advice this evening.

Ok, I was working from my existing items from the POS (just updating inventory, pictures, descriptions, etc). So I have to remake each item fresh in online for the modifier settings to hold?
I sell jewelry. So I had modifier list like brass earrings hooks, silver necklace lengths, etc... And I'm only applying one list per item.

I don't think so. Try this.
Once you have the item you want online. Reapply the modifier to the item and resave it. Basically uncheck the modifier. Save...recheck the modifier...save. That should have it pick up the modifier customization for the items. You can bulk apply modifiers under the modifier page on the dashboard.
When I edit an existing item that is online and I change the modifier customization it is picked up automatically.
Do you have your online store set to sync with the point of sale?

I have syncing turned on. I tried to do what you said, to no avail.
Two things I noticed though - even though I have it set to not make an item unavailable when I import it, it does anyway.
Also, after I choose the modifier, the little pop up from the set up guide stills shows up telling me I can customize the modifier individually. Even though I have completed the set up guide completely.
