How do I set up the Item Library to allow for custom menu items?

Hello. I am setting up our library for the first time. We are a small cafe with a coffee and sandwhich menu. I have been able to set up the coffee menu by adding variations to items. However, I am looking for feedback on setting up our sandwhich menu. We have a "create your own" sandwhich where guests can choose their bread, meat, chesse, and spreads. For all items on our sandwhich menu we give the option of greens, chips or cookie. I'm not sure that creating variations is very efficient as there are really endless combinations. Is there a more efficient way to set up the Item Library to allow for this?

I would suggest not making a variation for each type of sandwich, but instead adding a modifier for each item.  Basically, create a "Build Your Own Sandwich" item, then create "Bread," "Cheese," "Meat," and "Spread" modifiers.  Add all of those modifiers to the "Build Your Own Sandwich" item.  That will allow you to choose each modifier as they order.

How would you recommend setting up customizations? I have Signature sandwiches but I am imagining people may want to "add cheese" or "add spread". If this is the case I want there to be a small upcharge. Any suggestions?

Here's a link on how to set up modifiers.
https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5119
At the top of the article you will see this:

"If you need customisable options – toppings, add-ons, or special requests –  create item modifiers. Modifiers that are applied to items will display on your customers’ digital receipts, from Transactions in your online Dashboard and in the Item Details report."

Add-ons will allow you to specify a price.
