How do I know if card declined or if square system is not working properly.

If a card declines, you will see one of these messages pop up on your screen:

 

  • “Declined. Card has expired. Please use a different card.”
  • “Declined. Please use a different card.”
  • “Declined. Please have cardholder call issuer before retrying transaction.”
  • “Declined. Please verify the card number, expiration date, CVV and ZIP code.” (from the Card Declined Help File)

Also, if you are using the contactless reader, the four lights on the reader will be red.

 

Usually if Square is having difficulties, your screen will just get stuck in the spinning circle of doom and not move past it.

 

You can also check to see if Square is online on their nifty (and underrated) Is Square Up? website.

Customers cards which are issued by California EDD getting declined. Last 3 weeks all cards are declined so it means there is some problem in square system. These cards do not have any logo or bank name. Customers have money in their accounts but still cannot use at my store with Square App. Missing valuable sales. Help wanted ASAP.

We are not given an exact reason when a card is declined, @PJ_Oak.

 

If your customers have confirmed their cards are valid and the transaction is still declining, they should contact their card-issuing entity for more information. There may be restrictions that the California EDD would better be able to speak to (contact information at the bottom of that page). I hope this is helpful information!
