How do I accept a payment with a magstripe reader?

I do use Square for sending Invoices to Customers who buy during my "LIVE" Shows. I am getting ready to set up at a Market and need to learn about accepting Credit cards.

When I ring up a Customers order on a regular Cash register and they hand me a Credit Card....what are the steps to take their payment using the Square Reader that attaches to my phone via earphone jack?

Do I have to open my Square app on my phone before swiping card etc?

Welcome to Square and the Seller Community! ✨

To accept a payment, you will download the Square app onto your device, open it, plug in the reader, then take the payment. You'll know the reader is successfully plugged in, because you'll now see a swipe card option, rather than just accepting cash and/or manually enter cards.
