Filter items by category using iPhone

I recently changed from an android to iPhone.

Using Square Register on an android at the top of the items list you can select the category. It then shows only items within that category.

On iphone it only has a search option at the top and lists all items. Is there a setting I'm missing? I figured Square would work better with ios.  Otherwise I have to rename all my items to make them easier to find - wow that would be a major job and throw off my reports.

If I haven't somehow overlooked this, please please please add this to ios. It's a major deal for me.  Thank you

Re: Filter items by category using iPhone

Hello everyone.

At this time, the ability filter items by category when adding an item to a sale isn’t available on an iPhone. This feature is exclusive to iPads and Android devices.

While I don't have an exact timeline, we are currently working to bring this feature to all supported devices, so keep an eye out for updates to the app and hopefully we can get it out for you in the near future.

I also have been wondering about this (And how has it been 5 years?!) But it *looks like* there's been an update! I just went into my Square app on my iPhone and they've rearranged the entire app for easier interface.

When clicking the "Checkout" button at the bottom, it now gives you 3 options - 1st is Keypad, for entering in a dollar amount, 2nd is Library (this is where all your Categories are!!!!) and 3rd is Favorites, where you can keep certain items tagged as a favorite.

It seems like our wishes have been granted!

+1 please add this feature for the iPhone Square "POS" app.  This is our 300-person, non-profit organization's first time using Square.  It's bad enough not being able to get a decent view of individual's sales (without the upsell to employee management).  It is very frustrating for all of our iPhone using parents during this busy fundraising season.  If the marketing thought is to upsell organizations into using iPads which have the feature and thus potentially sell more Square Stands, I am disappointed.

Define "soon"? I came here to find out why I can sort by category on my iPad but not my iPhone and discovered that users have been requesting this for literally years. I'm about to start selling at festivals and this feature would make my life a lot easier - in addition to being something that your users obviously want.

So... what do you mean by "soon" and you can add my vote to the Features That Need To Be Implemented Like Yesterday tally.

Hello @Ranjan, welcome to the Seller Community!

Currently we are still collecting feedback for this feature request. I know this thread has been around for awhile, but we are still tracking activity on this thread. If you'd like to learn more about feature requests and our process I recommend checking out the thread Feature Requests & the Seller Community

The context of "soon" in EJ's reply doesn't imply an actual time frame. Currently we are unable to share timelines of products or features in development. I hope this clears things up! If you still have questions please feel free to reach out to me. 🙂

This seems to me an easy fix; I used to develop and sell iOS applications.  The functional code has been written (currently available for iPad), so "development time" is a weak delay tactic.  Yes, I fully understand the difference in iPhone and iPad GUI and nuances of implementation procedures, but you know as well as I do it would take a--dare I say--basic programmer less than a day to implement this functionality.  If the feature were not already available for iPad, my stance would be much different.

As a developer, I do acknowledge the plight of the development team in that you cannot please everyone.  As soon as one new feature is implemented, clients want 10 more...and 10 more...and 10 more.  I get it.  Still, this feature is a basic UX coding problem, not a core rewrite.

The fact is those of us (myself included) asking for this are the lowest priority to your company.  We do not make Square enough money for you to care about us.  We can just be pushed aside...for if we leave there will not be so much as even a blip on your bottom line.  Your focus is not the little guy, and I can somewhat understand that.  It would be poor business to focus on the client bringing you $100/month and ignore the one giving you $10,000/month.  But, it was the little guy that got you all started.  Square didn't start with $1,000 register systems.  It started with a $10 scanner you plugged into a phone.  How quickly startups that make it big forget about when they were a startup.  It is sad.

Hey @GeoffKruse, thank you for checking in and taking the time to share your experience with this. I went to look for any updates on the ability to filter items by category when signed in on an iPhone, but there isn't anything that I can access and share out right now.

I am surfacing your post with our Point of Sale team and will point out how improving this feature would make a positive impact on your workflow. For more information on how we advocate for requests and how they get done, have a look at this post: Feature Requests & the Seller Community.

Really sorry for the frustration—please do keep in touch for updates.

Welp. It's 2019 and this feature is still not available. What the what !? I sell wholesale and retail, so being able to define the two categories and then select between them is an extremely important feature! This one simple thing is literally keeping me from being able to use square versus a competitor's system.

Mind boggling this hasn't been fixed by now.

We have been asking for this feature to be included since AT LEAST 2016.

You can't tell me that you can't figure it out in 3+ years.

Can you give us something other than a nothing answer of, "Thanks, we're working on it?"

Add me to the list of Square users that need category filtering on an iphone and are very frustrated at the long wait for such a basic but important feature.

I started my business last year and organizing Square was low on my priority list. As I'm getting ready for the season, I decided to try and figure out how to streamline my sales process and I can't believe this isn't implemented. What's even the point of setting up categories if I can't use them on iPhone?

So... add another person to the list who thinks it is pretty awful that this has not been implemented after years (seriously???) of people asking for it. Since this is available on iPad and Android, this is a GUI issue (and not that significant... just add that other button on iPhone) and should be easy to push for iPhone. It doesn't even need to be default, just give the option.

I'm disappointed that after three years this problem is still not fixed. We use squares for expos and not being able to sort by category using square makes square impossible to keep using for our events. I wonder if Clover has this problem...

I was told by a multi-millionaire friend of mine to stop using square. He said they are horrible and not worth the hassle. He suggested switching to shopify or etsy because they have all of the web tools and you can just use their app to process orders and its more robust then square.

He also told me square customer support is not concerned with small business anymore and have grown beyond helping the little guy.

Things I wish I knew before buying my go daddy shopping website and spending all

of my money on this processor.

ironically, one of my sales reps just informed me that you can’t process orders effectively on a smaller iPhone, he just switched from the 6s Plus to the regular 8.

Apparently he can’t see the same amount of characters I can on my XS Max.  See  the two pics below. The one with red is what I can see. His view is limited. This could easily be avoided if I could have subcategories because I could drop the brand name an just list the item.

in Tennis, each brand has several lines of racquets and several different versions in each line and each racquet comes in 4-5 different grip sizes, so having to lump 50-60 different racquet entries is a pain when I could have the following:

Category: Wilson Tennis Racquets

subcategories:

Clash

Blade

Pro Staff

Ultra

etc.

Then sales reps could easily see the grip size. A modifier doesn’t work for me because the modifier doesn’t impact inventory correctly.

My view on a bigger screen in red. If my sales reps don’t know the following info, and most don’t because grip size 4 and 1/4 for example is common knowledge amongst players and coaches.

For Pro Shops, Manufacturers and Racquet Technicians, we refer to that grip size as a 2. Most of my sales reps are coaches and they have to be educated on that in order to place the correct order for the correct grip. This could easily be rectified with subcategories because names could be shortened.

As you can see, even on my bigger phone it doesn’t show the entire name, so that’s an issue.

I'm sorry this isn't available yet @Cnyracing @Super_Stringer. Thank you for sharing the screenshots to, these clearly show how a category would help your reps when using the app on other iPhones. I really appreciate your feedback and I'll share this with the Point of Sale team.

This is still a work in progress and it is a long-term project. We'll post in this thread to let you know when you can filter items by category with an iPhone in future.

The ability to search in a category is not just an iPhone issue! I'm on an iPad, and when I go to do a sale, I click on a category for beers, then the beers category window shows up - with no search field. Bartenders have to scroll through the long list of items to find what they are looking for. Being able to type at the top something that starts with w would eliminate a lot of wasted time scrolling.

It's been another year, still no progress as far as I know. Square has rolled out dozens of new programs and services and we still can't get a filter button.

Square Team, can you give us an update?

That may be the way it is on your iPhone, however my iPhone 11 (with the latest update only hast two categories; Keypad & Library...And neither allows us to switch Categories to Transfer or to Checkout.

I'm considering looking elsewhere for a Merchant Sales system that meets my needs.

Also, I'm not happy with Square Support access.
