Up to 30% faster order entry, 100% happier customers: Updates coming to your Square Kiosk

We’re upgrading your customer ordering for even more sales – at no additional cost. We originally launched Square Kiosk to be similar to our Square Online experience. But this meant that kiosk ordering with finger taps on an iPad was relying on a customer experience originally designed for mouse clicks on a desktop. So behind the scenes, we’ve been working to optimize Square Kiosk for customer ordering conversions and for your own convenience as a food-and-beverage operator. Here’s where we landed:

Keep reading to understand how these changes will benefit your business, and find out what this change means for you. Also note that you will need to make sure your app is up-to-date once you receive notice that this change is coming to your business.

Updates available in the coming days:

  • Visual Categories: Browse menus faster with photo-based sections -- with all categories visible at once.

  • Bigger Text: Read and tap menu items easily with larger, clearer text.

  • Cart Always in View: See your items and total instantly while you order.

  • Lightning-Fast Loading: Start ordering right away with zero wait time.

  • Simplified Item Assignment: Control your kiosk menu visibility more easily with a new toggle at the item level in Square Dashboard.

Our team has been testing, and we’re seeing up to 30% faster order entry time.

What to Do to Get Ready:

  • Adjust where you control item visibility in Square Dashboard. Going forward, to update an item’s visibility for it to appear on your kiosk menu, you can go to Item > "where it's sold" > select Kiosks. You no longer need to update Site Visibility or Fulfillment for kiosk visibility. Note that you will need the item’s Category to also have Kiosks toggled on for the item to show. You can access full directions and learn how to bulk update availability in this article.

  • Add category images if you don’t have them yet. If any of your categories don’t have an image, an image for an item within that category will show instead. For example, if you don’t have a category image for “Drinks,” Square Kiosk will automatically pull an example drink picture from your menu for you.

  • Be aware that marketing customization will change for the foreseeable future. In order to standardize menus and optimize for order sales conversions, we are temporarily removing the welcome screen background image and font size control. With that said, all of our beta sellers of this new experience have been happy with the change.

Ready to get started?

  • On your iPad, go to Settings > App Store and turn "App Updates" ON

  • In Settings, scroll to the Square Kiosk app and set Background App Refresh to ON

  • Close and reopen the Square Kiosk app. (This will require you exit Guided Access mode on each device, if you are not using third-party Mobile Device Management to control devices from a back office).

ℹ️ Note: Updates are rolling out gradually over the next few weeks. If you don't see the update yet, please check again later. You'll receive an email notification approximately 48 hours before your update is ready.

Share your feedback! From your desktop Square Dashboard, go to Settings > Device Management > Kiosk. Click Share Feedback at the bottom right, rate your experience (1-7), and let us know your thoughts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this change the monthly software cost of Square Kiosk?

No.

What are the benefits to my business?

Speed up checkout lines with faster checkout, guide new customers through their first order seamlessly.

Any limitations to be aware of?

In standardizing the ordering experience to optimize for conversions, we are applying consistent font to every menu and removing the marketing background image on your welcome screen. Note, though, that this is a temporary change as our team builds out additional marketing controls in the future.

Sorry @emusumano this is really badly written.

So when is this update coming? Some stuff says ‘coming soon’ but then you talk about just updating the app when you’re ready to go.

Later you say ‘if you don’t see it it’s cos you don’t have it yet’ (paraphrasing here) - but you’ll give users 48hours notices of when you change it for them.

While the update looks good, and closer to what we were all expecting at launch this just looks messy. I really thought we’d got passed this stuff with the release manager experience.

Hi @Sam_400º , thank you for the feedback. We have added more detail to the post, but basically we are releasing the updates on a rolling basis to three waves of sellers. You will receive an email 48 hours ahead of when your account specifically will receive the change, and at that point, you'll just want to make sure that your app version is up-to-date. So in terms of directions: keep your auto-updates on for the Square Kiosk app. This way, once we let you know your account is getting the update soon, you'll see the change be reflected automatically to the new diner ordering UI within the next two days. The first wave of sellers will receive an announcement by email tomorrow. Thanks!

I'm ready for this!

I used to manage what displayed on my lobby Kiosk by going:
Select > Devices > Kiosk > Select Items & Categories

From there, I could choose exactly which items and categories to show. Even hidden items/categories stayed hidden, and I could hide out-of-stock items by setting their stock to >0.

Since the latest software update a few days ago, these controls are completely broken:

  • All categories and items now display on the Kiosk, including hidden ones.

  • My changes don’t stick — I can configure the settings as before, but they don’t take effect.

  • When I return to the settings screen, everything has reverted to “visible.”

I’ve opened a support ticket, but I haven't received a response since Friday.

Has anyone else seen this and found a workaround?

P.S. I do like the new Kiosk look — the running cart display for customers as they add items is a nice touch.

Hi @MarkSpiegelman,

Our engineering team is looking into your experience, and thank you for bearing with us. In the meantime, I know we connected via DM, but also sharing for others some details on menu visibility. With our update to the Square Kiosk iOS app, it no longer relies on Square Online’s ordering system. This change supports a faster experience that is more optimized to drive sales. It also lets you control Kiosk item visibility separately from Square Online. To update an item's visibility at any time, you can go to Item > scroll to "where it's sold" > check or uncheck the Kiosks toggle. If anyone is having menu visibility issues, please try following this step ASAP from Square Dashboard. Thank you!

So far we are loving the new experience, especially how the cart stays visible. Many of our customers would mistakenly tap the Start Over button.

Now the one major problem we have, is items that are Out of Stock used to not appear, but now they are all showing an "Out of Stock" badge. It's really causing some confusion because we have a lot of seasonal items that we don't stock year round. We'd like the visibility to follow our Square Online settings and not be visible unless it's in-stock.

@GlutenOffBakery, thank you for this call-out. We are working on a fix for this (on app version 6.78) that we should be able to release to your account by the end of September. I am also adding other members of the team@sophiayseo @NKRfromProduct, as I will be going out on mat leave beginning Sept 15th. Sophia and Nanditha can remain close on answering any other Qs beginning on this date. But I'll be here in the meantime. Thank you!
