Business Basics: Great Books for Every Business

We’ve put together a short list of some of the best books for business owners. These books provide an opportunity to learn new strategies and best practices that you can apply to your business. Every business is different, so you can pick and choose the tips and tricks from each to help you with a specific strategy, including how to build your brand or make more sales, and how to have better interactions with customers or manage your team.

 Management

The One Minute Manager, Kenneth H. Blanchard, Spencer Johnson

Check out this practical and short guide to managing others. The premise of this book is that with a series of minute-long tasks, you can set up your team for success. This book was first published in 1982 so it is widely available.

Customer service

Hug your Haters: How to Embrace Complaints and Keep Your Customers, Jay Baer

If you interact with customers, this is a great resource. There are practical steps outlined for how to handle customer complaints received online — such as on your social media pages or on review sites — as well as how to handle customer complaints received over the phone or by email.

Sales

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, Robert B. Cialdini

While not strictly a business book, Cialdini’s research will give you a greater understanding into why people act the way they do and how you can motivate them to ‘say yes.’ Well worth the read.

To Sell is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others, Daniel Pink

This book uses social science research to understand how to ‘move others’ — from customers to your own kids. Accessible and informative.

Branding

Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen, Donald Miller

This book details how to use story points to build a brand for your business. Miller shows that building a narrative for your brand, and sharing a specific message with your customer, can have a big impact.

Marketing

This is Marketing: You Can't Be Seen Until You Learn To See, Seth Godin

Many books have been written about marketing, but Seth Godin’s are entertaining while informative. With short anecdotes and case studies throughout, this book will help you understand how to bring what you're selling to your customers.

Setting yourself up for success

The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It, Michael E. Gerber

Learn how to avoid common assumptions when starting and running a business. This book has been in print for over 20 years, so it should be available in your local library, or you can pick up a second-hand copy.

Company of One: Why Staying Small Is the Next Big Thing for Business, Paul Jarvis

Company of One shows the value of being your own boss and how not focusing solely on scale and growth can lead to a rewarding and productive lifestyle.

Profit First is a must!

I've seen a lot about profit first - will be checking it out for sure.

I can't support Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen, enough. This is a great book in learning to talk well about your company and how to get people to notice.

Traction: A Startup Guide to Getting Customers and the rest of the series, Rocket Fuel, Get a Grip, How to be a great boss, What the heck is EOS - depending on where you are as an entrepreneur and where your company is these books can be very helpful.

My biggest challenge in reading is a constant desire to explore, see new things and learn. This has led me to regularly bounce between different models. Many of them are helpful; the key is choosing a system and sticking to it. Add new systems only when they fill holes and don't distract from the system you've chosen.

An excellent resolution if you ask me (it might be one of mine, ever year!)

Can confirm The E-Myth Revisited is as timely now as it was when it was first published!

Coming from a hospitality perspective, I always push the following onto anyone who thinks running a food & beverage venue is a walk in the park:

What I know About Running Coffee Shops - Colin Harmon

Super approachable and concise writing from one of the coffee industry's many poster boys; is the literal handbook on how to pull the venture off.

Setting the Table - Danny Meyer

One of a handful of books that delves deep into what 'hospitality' means to a guest and to the staff providing the service. If you don't mind reading through the prism of someone else's heavily edited experience, this book can be a paradigm-shifting.

The Uncertainty Mindset - Vaughn Tan

An uncommon view into the highly flexible 'structures' within fine-dining establishments that allow for constant innovation in the face of uncertainty, and how companies that have scaled (read: calcified) might learn a thing or two from them.

The Challenger Sale - Matthew Dixon & Brent Adamson

Similar to Seth Godin's stuff, really helps one solidify their value proposition to customers.

How to Win Friends and Influence People - Dale Carnegie

Letters From a Self-Made Merchant to His Son - George Horace Lorimer (in public domain and therefore free!)

The final two may seem dated in the way The E-Myth sometimes reads, but I'd like to think it proves how unchanging the basic principles of running a business are.

Thank you for starting this thread, @Helen ! Reading's one of the ways I get to switch off from the shop, even if it ends up being about business anyway, and being able to recommend some of my favorites is a joy. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this list from the hospitality perspective @QuokkaCoffee. I haven't read Colin Harmon's book (What I know About Running Coffee Shops) but I think I've had some a 3FE coffee when he had a tiny, tiny coffee shop in Dublin.

You've also given me an idea to maybe start a few more lists but on books for a specific industry. I agree reading is a great way to switch off and if you're reading about something you love (your business!) then it doesn't seem like 'work' after all.
