Hello! Just to confirm, you're asking about having the header videos pre-loaded for viewers when they first visit the site?

Yes. Instead of them having to wait on the video to load, it should just be ready to go. My video headers take FOREVER. It's makes them useless

The time for the video backgrounds to load will depend mostly on the connection they're being loaded through, as well as the file size on the headers, just like large videos in other contexts. They do seem to be loading in a timely manner here, so you may be seeing issues specific to the network.

Having them loaded when the site loads would require the site's other content to be withheld, in that case, which would make the entire site slower.

So why do pages flash during transitions?

Are any other users noticing flashes when transitioning from page to page?

Webpages need smoother transitions, not only because they look cool but also because the content of the page loads before the Layout is complete so there is a flash between consecutive pages.

Can you post a link to your site and which pages you are switching between, @Mr_Galvin?

Hello Adam,

Getting down to the nitty gritty...

When I transition from

https://www.abcstudiosauckland.com/bass.html to

https://www.abcstudiosauckland.com/guitar.html

there is no flash.

Going from

https://www.abcstudiosauckland.com/guitar.html to

https://www.abcstudiosauckland.com/singing.html

there is a flash.

Likewise going from

https://www.abcstudiosauckland.com/bass.html to

https://www.abcstudiosauckland.com/drums.html

there is a flash.

https://www.abcstudiosauckland.com/singing.html and

https://www.abcstudiosauckland.com/drums.html

have slideshows so I suppose the slideshow is slowing down the background.

Could we somehow delay the slideshow by 100ms or so? (Maybe more or less).

That would give the page background and header time to render. It does not matter if the slideshow is a bit delayed, in fact a fade-in looks cool.

What do you think?

Stephen

Did you remove the slideshows? I didn't see a flash, but I also don't see slideshows. I'm not sure there would be an easy way to delay the loading of the slideshow. You could try a third party slideshow app, or temporarily try a different theme to see if that helps.

Hello Adam,

Thank you for your reply.

( I may have given you another site sorry) The site is: https://www.singinglessonsauckland.com/

Please note the linked video where you can see the flash as we move from page to page.Video

As for 'preloading' I am not an expert on HTML except my Firefox Browser made the following note in Web Developer Tools : "Layout was forced before the page was fully loaded. If stylesheets are not yet loaded this may cause a flash of unstyled content." This might be related.

Any ideas? I am sure other clients would be interested in this as well.

Thank you

Stephen

Hi Stephen. The site appears to be using a custom theme, and it's possible something in the code is causing the flash. Like Adam, though, I did not notice a flash while loading.

Does this happen for you in all browsers?
