Weebly Tip of the Week: Blog Posts, Images, and Sharing to Facebook

Our recent blog post on starting a blog got me thinking about common questions I and other team members see with blog posts and social media.  You’ve written a great blog post, and now you’re sharing it to Facebook.  What can you do to ensure that your blog post looks awesome when you share it? It’s really a lot easier than you’d think.

Images

If you want an image to display with your post (and let’s be honest, your share is a lot more eye-catching if it includes an image), Facebook provides clear guidelines on what you need to do to have the best results.

For a larger banner-sized image with your share, make sure your image is at least 600 x 315 or larger.

image

Anything smaller than that will display next to post information.  The bare minimum for an image to be used at all is 200 x 200.

image

Facebook also recommends that your image ratio be as close to 1.91:1 as possible to prevent cropping.

Text

Facebook will scan your post and select title and text information for your post automatically.  If you want to control that in specific, click on Post Options to the lower left while editing your post and enter an SEO title and SEO description.  Facebook will use these instead.

As you can see from what I entered above, that information plus the large image I used in my test resulted in the share looking like this:

Two more tips:

  1. If you decide to change something or if something doesn’t look right, you’ll need to request Facebook re-scrape your site.  They have a handy debug tool which you can use to clear their cache and fetch new information: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/
  2. If you have multiple images in your post and Facebook isn’t using your preferred image, use the debug tool above to clear Facebook’s cache, then share the URL of the post yourself again right on Facebook.  You should get an option to pick through available images.

On my Facebook, I have a page and a group. I can share to the page but not the group. Is this a Facebook issue or a Weebly issue?

That's a really great question, @PaulyPUK. Offhand I'm not sure whether it's possible to set up sharing to a group like a page or profile, although I'd recommend suggesting that on our Vote on Features board:

If it's possible for our engineers to develop that I'm sure other users would love to have the option. Smiley Happy

Can you share the post from your page to the group? I do that all the time. I share the post to my page and then from my page to the group. Would that work for you?

Are you looking to share a page of your site on your group page, or share the URL of your Facebook page itself on your group page?

actually I got it figured out. i was originally wanting my weeb blog to to push posts to both my facebook biz page and its associated fb personal page. i can make it do one or the other (weebly writing gurus, why is this?) so then i set it to push to the fb personal page but for the life of me couldn't see where to share it to the biz page. I found it. The whole thing is cumbersome though. I have to publish my blog then got to facebook and manualy share each post to the fb biz page..... very archaic but it is working out and i blame facebook.....

Where can I find the Post Options in weebly that you show in the "Text" section of your article? When I click Publish, it just publishes the page, there are no other options. Can't even save a secret draft...

Those options are only available when editing a blog post, and are found by clicking the blue "post options" button on the lower left.

Where do I choose what image I want to go with the share? I have an image in my blog post but only the image from my sidebar shows up in the share.

What is the URL of your blog post, @Permachris? I'll take a look.

Adam, The same thing is happening to me but with pinterest share. The share button captures my blog text but not the Photo!!!. The text always shows on the photo from my sidebar. It's making me crazy!!!

Take a look. image

Is it only on your blog posts where it does that, @butterforall?

Thanks for responding Adam. No, When you share the home page it captures the SEO description on one random photo and shows all the photos on the homepage to choose from. But it doesnt show the sidebar photos.??? I'm trying to use Filament Flare. I've had such a hard time getting share buttons to work. I'm getting very discouraged Smiley Sad

It seems like the filament flare script seems to just prefer that image over the one in the post for some reason (I'm not sure what criteria it uses to pick an image to go with your text).

You might have better luck using Pinterest's pin-it widget:

@Adam same problem I was just trying to find a solution. Facebook offers me a variety of photos to choose from, but not the one in the actual blog post. Do I really have to implement another tool to make this happen?  Seems kinda crazy, cumbersome, etc. especially given what I need (and pay for) for my website.

I'll continue this thread, but looks like it's going in other directions.

Thanks, Allison

I have a question. Whenever I share a new blog post to Facebook and Twitter it always shares using the same image, which is the one I use in my sidebar. How do I change that so I can post using an image from the blog?

Hello Samuelschey! Just to be sure, are you sharing the blog page itself, or the specific blog post's URL?

If there is no image in an individual post, FB will use the RSS Feed logo. Looks terrible. I'd like to set an image for the whole site which OpenGraph will use as a default in the event there is no image found within the post itself.

I have several clients who share only a video and some text in a single blog post. FB doesn't pick up the thumbnail image from the video so when I share one of these blog posts to FB the thumbnail image is usually a overzoomed RSS Feed logo - apparently the only image it can find in the post.

I'd like to establish a default image that will be supplied whenever a single post doesn't have an image. I don't see a Weebly site setting allowing me to set such a default image. I assume I can include that with some kind of code in the header or footer, but I'm not a coder. Can you help me or direct me to a resource to figure this out?
