@MrLBL: do you have a fat website? Do you have lots of images, slideshows, gallery, videos, audio files? Are you using images that are optimized in terms of size as well as quality? i.e. are you using 1,000x1,000 image when you need on ly 150x150.
Have you modified your theme with losts of third party java and other crap like affiliate images and links?
