I am looking to completely overhaul our site, but it will be several weeks before it is ready for publication. Is there a way to keep the newly created site in the background while I continue to make daily tweaks to the active site?

You can work on your site in the editor as much as you want and the live site will remain unaffected, provided your don't publish. It's not uncommon for people to make a copy of their site, though, that they way thave an editable version should they need it.

I'm in the same boat... doing a complete site overhaul. The overhaul will take a few weeks to get together and get acceptance sign off. During this time, the current site will be updated weekly. What are my options here? I need to develop a new site while keepnig the current site upto date. Then, I'll cutover to the new site. Would I need a second account? Could the free account be used to develop on and then merge the new site into the current pro site?
Thanks in advance.

You can use a free site, @nick_oehler and then we can move the service over for you. Another option is to work on hidden pages in the original site, and then replace them with the current live pages when ready. This is useful if you have a blog you want to keep as blogs will not copy over to a new site if you choose to copy content.
