Shipping Conundrum

Hi,

I've spent hours trying to sort out this shipping issue and I could use some help.

Currently we ship hatching eggs from our site. We sell in 1/2 dozen increments and can fit 1 dozen per box. I painstakingly tweaked our shipping to reflect this when we started, we ship by the number of items, and the shipping price goes up by every 2 items (or per dozen eggs, or per box shipped). So, for example, 1-2 items is $10 to ship, 3-4 items is $20, etc. I made shipping profiles for each USPS zone and our shipping has been accurate, everything has been going super smoothly. We also have a free shipping profile for local pickups.

However, this year I would like to start shipping other products, hatching supplies. My first product is very small and light and I can include it for no additional cost in any hatching egg order. OR it would cost about $3.50 to ship separately.

Since my established shipping setting are based on number of items, this is not working. Adding the new product is way overcharging customers if people order multiple items.

Is there ANY possible workaround for this? Would I need to convert all my shipping profiles to be weight based? Is there a best way to do this? If so, how would I make sure that there was no additional charge if these items were included in a larger package, but still charged appropriately if I shipped separately?

If I upgraded my plan to Performance would this be more easily addressed? Would that let me have the option to do what I describe above?

I've spent so much time customizing shipping to have this all make sense, I just want to reiterate what I've seen a lot of others say, that I would LOVE some improvements on our shipping options. Thank you!!!

I believe weight based would be the way to go.  Be advised however if you ship large and bulky items

the charges will go up substantially (based upon a density rule vs. straight weight).  For example a pound of

feathers will take up much more room than a pound of lead so the carriers have different classes of freight to match the different types of freight items.
