My video failed to encode. What do I do so I can upload it?

[Note: The title of this post has been edited by a moderator.]

I keep trying to upload videos that are below the 1GB maximum but when they complete buffering, I get the error: "Video failed to encode".  Any tips?

If you're getting an error trying to encode a video after uploading, try the following:

  • Make sure there are no spaces or non-alphanumeric characters in the filename.
  • Try exporting the video as a new file.
  • Try converting to a different format. Valid formats include MP4, AVI, and MOV.

If you don't have a program you can use to export or convert the video, checkout Handbrake. It's totally free!

Are all 4 videos the same format, aspect ratio, encoding, etc? Meaning there's absolutely no difference between them with the exception of fize size and length?

I am having the same problem. I even tried re-uploading the exact same file I had successfully uploaded earlier and I am getting the same 'Failed to Encode' error. So I don't think there is anything wrong with my new file as even the old files are now failing.

That's unfortunate, @RR19. Does that continue to happen if you switch to another browser?

THANK YOU!!  NO SPACES IN THE VIDEO NAME - that's what worked!  My video is almost 4 minutes long and made in Imovie.

I have had the same problem - some videos load others get the "Failed to encode" message.  I've tried changing formats from MOV to MP4 - doesn't make a difference.  I've tried no spaces in the name, still doesn't work.  These are very short stop-motion videos (maybe 30 secs at most).  I have tried rebuilding the page, but to no avail.  I've tried uploading at different times of the day (to avoid "high traffic" times on school wifi).  Still doesn't load all the videos.  HELP!  My students are sad that their videos won't display on our website.

Thanks,

Mandy

Try encoding to something like .AVI, @MGudteach. Certain video encoding changes don't actually re-encode the video - they just change the video wrapper.

The VLC Media Player program I use does not have .AVI as a conversion option.  Could you suggest another (free) program to convert video files?

Thanks,

Mandy

Handbrake has worked well for me in the past. It's sort of a swiss army knife of Video conversion, and is totally free and open source:

ok, well, I figured out how to convert to an .avi file in VLC.  When I tried to upload this avi video, I got the message with a movie reel and text saying "Click here to upload video".

I tried using handbrake - same result.  Very frustrating.  Any idea why this won't load?  it is happening randomly with other videos also.  Some load, some don't.

It's hard to say without having the file. Have you submitted a ticket to support? An agent can request permission to test the video and publish to make sure the error is not on our end.

No - didn't realize that was an option.  I will try that.  Thank you!
