How often can error be expected

Hi.

I haven't launched my site yet, but we have about 1 million users per year. Each of them are important and we cannot afford to loose any of them. During building the website, the error message: This site is currently undergoing maintenance, and will be back shortly. pops up.

How often can this be expected to happen? I see it maybe every 3 days. This will lead to a tremendous loose in users. Is there any way to minimize the risk of this showing?

Thanks!

Simon

Thanks for your question, @SimonWakeus. Was this an error you saw when going to Weebly.com, or one you saw visiting your published website?

Hi Adam,

I saw it on my published website, on several pages.

Do you happen to have a screenshot? I've seen an "undergoing maintenance" splash page before, but that was only once nearly 2 years ago. I also don't see any other recent reports of this happening, but if you provide a screenshot it may provide a little more context.

Hello.

Sure, I am quite concerned about this. It pops up every other day, so until this stops, I cannot tranfer to our current domain.

Please get back to me as soon as you know if there is something I can do about this.

Thanks.

Are you clicking on a bookmark, or clicking on something on the site itself? There's a lot of extra characters in the url which looks a little off to me. When I visit https://professionalsecretstesting.weebly.com/ I am able to load it without an issue.

Hi!

The site I am building has around 1000 pages and the URL is automatically chosen. I can change the URL on each page if you think that might improve the stability?

As you tried, I can also always visit the site. This instability pops up every now and then on any of those 1000 pages, but the site itself always works.

It is not a bookmark, it just shows up when I am browsing around on the site - almost every day. Might changing to a simpler URL improve the stability? The site being unstable will greatly harm the brand we are building so any advice is greatly appreciated.

Do you have any third party apps installed? Usually something like this is affecting all sites and we're aware of it, but I could see an app causing a problem, potentially.

Hi Adam,

I am using a few third party-apps. These are only affecting design such us round pictures. Could this affect the stability?

A theory I think might affect is when I am editing a page and then publish it, then this error pops up on this site. Is it that the weebly servers needs a while to process and publish the edited page? After a while (not sure how long) the same page works as it should.

If this is the problem, I fear that I will not be able to edit the site when it is published.

Simon

Hmm... One of the domains I see being used to get data for your site is wuildit.com - I believe that is used by the bloggons app. That domain has gone down a few times and caused some issues when it did; it's possible it was that app.

Hi @Adam

I am using Bloggons on my site yes. Do you think that this app (which I do not use too much on the site) causes the issue?

I also noticed that when one of the pages shows this error, I cannot find it when I search for it on the site. Can Bloggons cause the page to be indexed slower?

Best regards,

Simon

I have spoken to the support at Bloggons and they said the should not be the issue.

Can it be related to me editing a page? Say I edit some text in one page, hit publish. Can it take a while for weebly to process my change on the page - leading to the error popping up? The same page never stays down for more than 24 hours so something is probably being processed - right?

Thank you!

It doesn't seem like an edit should cause this type of problem, but do you only see the error on pages that use Bloggon?

@Bernadette

Only my home page uses bloggons. I use the following apps on almost all the other pages:

https://www.weebly.com/app-center/accordion-toggle1?ref=ac-search

https://www.weebly.com/app-center/porthole?ref=ac-search

https://www.weebly.com/app-center/color-block?ref=ac-search

Do you think one of these might cause the instability?

Thank you guys for helping me with this, I really appreciate it.

The only one I don't recognize is Porthole, but I don't see any mentions of those particular apps causing the issue you described. Do you know what was edited in the theme? Do you have any embedded custom code that you copy/pasted anywhere in the editor?

Hi @Bernadette

I have some custom code yes. But mainly to the header. Since I am a newbie at CSS/HTML I am not sure what exactly has been edited...

I think I might have found a solution, or maybe just a temporary one. Maybe you could give your opinion if it might be a longterm solution.

I had not updated or edited anything on my site for 1 week. Browsed around and saw the same issue on a few pages. Tried incognito - same issue. Tried new browser - same issue. So new I tried and went into SEO on each site, and just renamed the URL to whatever the page was called. Earlier the URL was maybe 40 characters of random numbers. Now it is just an ordinairy word. And suddenly, the pages which weren't functioning started.

Can this be a solution, the URL was too complex or something like that?

Thanks!

Interesting, @SimonWakeus. I'm not aware of any issues where the length of the page title would cause that kind of issue. Has this resolved every single page that was giving you trouble?

Hi @Adam

So I am currently changing all the URLs to more accurate one's than the ones chosen automatically. When I search for a page, it appears. But when I want to enter that page, the error shows up and the old URL shows up.

When I click my way through the site however, the page appears (no error) and has the new, correct URL. So there seems to be an issue with the search function, right?

I remember temporarily installing a third party search function but later removing this app. Can some code still be left from it? When I try to search on the site (you can try it as well: www.professionalsecretstesting.weebly.com) the URL states: https://professionalsecretstesting.weebly.com/apps/search?q=tigerr%C3%A4kor

This suggest it uses some app right? Not the normal one from Weebly?

If I go to the HTML/CSS, then click Partial, I have 2 items showing: "Header.tpl" and "pagination.item.tpl". If I go to the first one, called Header, I see this code:

<div id="wsite-search-header" class="clearfix">
<h2>{{#stl}}templates.platform.theme.base.search.header_1{{/stl}}</h2>
<div id="wsite-search-form-container">
{{{text_input_html}}}
</div>

</div>

Is this the standard Weebly search function? Or can this make the site malfunction?

We are incredibly keen to make this work, so any help is very appreciated.

Best regards,

Simon

That is our own built-in search so I wouldn't expect that to cause issues. It also isn't going to be rendered in the published site unless you're using it. I clicked on the link returned in the search results page you gave but didn't get an error. Hmm... this is truly weird how it seems to only show up for you.

If you use a mobile device with a mobile browser, do you ever see the error?

Hi @Adam

Thanks for replying. Although I have not tested it as much on mobile as on desktop, I have never seen the error on mobile devices. Could this be a thing?

It just helps narrow down what the cause could be, whether it's a desktop browser issue or a network issue (assuming your mobile device was using cellular data, anyway).
